Mark 97 Cutlass Coupe
Does anyone replace the coil packs as a maintainence item, like say spark plugs? I hear when they go they can cause all kinds of problems, and since my 3100 has about 135,000 miles, I try to keep ahead of issues that may cause a breakdown, especially something that is easy to replace. I would rather do it myself, than have a breakdown somewhere and get screwed paying a mechanic to do it. Thanks.
jman093
Does anyone do that? Yeah probably some people, but I personally wouldn't bother. They last just fine, especially if the car has always had regular plug changes its whole life. Also, when one goes bad it usually doesn't just completely stop, so it wouldn't cause a total breakdown, and even if it did you'd have 4 cylinders left still to limp home. urbex
They're kind of expensive to just replace if they aren't bad IMO. IIRC, they were around $80 or so each new for my Lumina with 3100. Me personally, I'd leave them be until you started having issues. Chances are it won't just leave you stranded if they start to go bad. Maybe if you found some cheap you could get them, but I wouldn't pay full price for a new set...
Galaxie500XL
That's one advantage of the DIS system...batch fire. Worst case, you lose one, it runs like garbage on 4 cylinders, but it will get you home, or to a parts store. They're kind of expensive to just replace if they aren't bad IMO.
