Drummer
I went through a bigger than I thought puddle in my 93 GP GTP and the water took out my alternator. So my question is do I have to take out the axle and everything to change out the alternator or can I change it out from underneith? Thanks. Z34guy
it should still be a bitch to do regardless of transmission as the location of the alternator is just plain retarded.

94 olds vert
so theres no difference at all weather it is a standard or auto An alternator is an alternator. Just as hard to get to with either trans.
slick
That procedure will work with both auto's or manual's.
rjOlds
When my alternator went a few years ago, I took one look at the procedure in the shop manual and effectively threw my hands up in the air and told the dealer to do it. They replaced it for $300 parts and labour. Not worth my time and aggravation. As for it being a retarded place, on an LQ1 I cannot think of moany other places to fit one in. Those cam carriers eat up all the spare space on top. A price to pay for having that motor (and as irrational as some people think, liking it as I do, maintenance headaches notwithstanding). GOT2B GM
I'd say you'd have better access to the back of the alt with the 5 spd
Drummer
There's no problem with me doing it it's just that I thought and heard that it's easier to change out the alternator on a 5 speed car than an auto but wasn't sure what part was easier. I was just trying to figure out how much time it would take me since I can use a lift but for only 2 hrs.
Drummer
Well just finished changing my alternator yesterday and it wasn't that bad at all, and of course all the bolts were there but were pretty easy to get to only pain was taking the bracket off that was right underneith the alternator as it was tightened pretty good. slick
Good deal! It's made out to be much worse than what it really is.
Psych0matt
yeah, I did it in the fall for the first time, but I had lots of time to fiddle with it. I could do it again a lot quicker, especially since I'm not missing bolts/parts now Definitely a pain, but not nearly as bad as what its made out to be if you have some patience
