striker85
Hi everyone. I'm thrilled to have found this forum. Looks like a lot of good info on here. But I decided to register because I'm pulling my hair out because of my car. I have an 89 Buick Regal with a 3.1. This car was a gem that was garaged by my grandfather for most of its life so it only has 60k on it. I've had to do a lot of work to it though just because of its age. List of things done in the near past (w/in 2 years): new plugs new wires new fuel filter new air filter new knock sensor 5 new injectors new a/c compressor w/ retro to 134a new brakes new rear calipers new tie rod ends new IAC and I'm sure a few others I forgot. Now here's the story. Just the other day, when out to pick up a pizza (w/in 30 seconds of my apartment) the car sputters and stall as I'm pulling into the parking lot. I get it started but it does not want to idle and continues to stall. I limp it home. Just last year I had a similar problem but it kinda crept up faster than it did this time. Ended up being a couple of dead injectors. So now, having a hunch, I take the plenum off and find two injectors, not DEAD, but way below spec. I replace them. No dice. If I try to start, it may catch and sputter a bit and die or just not start at all. If I feather the throttle it will start....even drive. The car will just NOT IDLE. I did replace the IAC a year or so ago, but I'm suspicious of it. I'm not getting and SES codes, though. At this point, I'm thinking two things....plugged cat (?) or bad fuel pump. Unfortunately, I don't have a fuel pressure gauge. What does everyone else think?
Money for Nothing
Clean the IAC and MAF and see how she runs. If it isn't any better, at least you haven't spent much money as opposed to replacing a part and it not helping. I would check out the O2 sensors first before replacing the cat. Not cheap, them cats. Also, welcome to here!
striker85
I was thinking IAC too. I'm gonna go get one now. There is no MAF on these motors. I have a MAP and MAT...that's it...unless I'm missing something. Thanks!
Money for Nothing
Maybe not. I am not super familiar with the early 3.1s.
striker85
New IAC...problem fixed. This is like the 3rd one I've put into this car. Sucks I went through the trouble of replacing injectors...though they were on the way out. But yeah, $35 and two screws, problem fixed. Money for Nothing
Good enough, then. Never heard of them going out alot, but then the car is what, 23 years old? lol. Did you go with OEM or cheapest you could get? That could be why the last one crapped out so soon.
