today i arived at my friends house after noticing a oddly high idle at home, and i put it in park and it died. i had to get it home and it was a complete pain to get it home it died at least 5 times. so my question is when i clean the valve are there any small things to remember so i dont mess it up? and should i clean it or just replace it?

Funny thing, I had the exact same symptoms. Non-consistant idle (high idle after driving for a while, low idle when first starting (and VERY hard to start; had to keep the gas on a bit)), engine being over-eager (felt like too much air in the system), etc. Ended up breaking the IAC when trying to clean it... DON'T push the spindle in! Apparently you're supposed to twist it in, if you're moving it. I replaced the IAC, did an unsuccessful idle relearn (couldn't find the FAQ anymore), and ended up taking it in to the shop because it still wouldn't idle right. All they did was spray it out with carb cleaner and reset it, then it ran right.

SO, if you replace it, do the idle relearn right! :P

The idle relearn recalibrates the IAC to the engine idle speed. Basically, the car sets the IAC's spindle to a given point so that it "knows" where it is. If you just take it out and clean it, probably no big deal. BUT if you're having idle problems, worth a shot anyway, no?

There was a FAQ outlining the procedure once upon a time. Like I said, I couldn't remember it properly and I didn't spend enough time looking for it in the FSM.

alright so i cleaned it out and there was no improvment at all. the part was pretty dirty but when i tried it the car just died and it seems to be running kinda rich too

i might just go and try to get a new part
