derekjm14
Alright, so I have replaced my ignition cylinder, ignition switch, bypassed the security, new battery, and a new starter.... The Lumina still won't start! It's a 99 with a 3.1L... when I run a cable directly from the battery to the starter you can hear the starter running, but it doesnt turn the engine over... I noticed that the gear on the new starter seemed to be in a slightly different location than the factory starter, but in bolted up just fine. Does anyone have any idea what would cause the Lumina to not start? When I turn the key the dash lights up, but it doesn't even attempt to start. Mel87
You said that you can hear the starter running but it isn't turning the engine over? Is the gear lining up right to the flywheel? Seems to me that the new starter has a defect or you don't have the starter lined up right.

Yeah, you can hear the starter turning over, but the engine doesn't do anything. I'll have to take a look at it to make sure I installed it correctly... the starter only works when I run the power directly from the battery though. It's doesn't do anything when I turn the key... Jprice90
i would imagine it would have something to do with the starter im confused as to why he had to do all that work though..lol
joecutlass
I just put in a new starter as well. Honestly dont believe it has anything to do with the starter.
Leo090
Before you fixed it.... when you put the key in, would the lights on the dash come on? Would any stay blinking? When you cranked did you hear any noises? or was it completly mute??? The key has an Identity chip that can fault out. I had made several copies and ended up throwing some keys out after they go bad and do not start my car. There is an security ignition cylinder that locks if the key is bad. I have heard that if you repeadetly use a bad key eventually the ingition locks for ever and requires replacement. I hope you dont have that

joecutlass
The key would just click. Starter doesnt turn. The starter only turns if you cross the terminals on the starter itself. fuel pressure is fine. Bur when thia car starts it runs beautifully
