Bake82
Looking at buying a Lumina Z34. Guy sent me a pic of the timing belt. I think it looks ok but thought i'd ask you guys! Thanks in advance!!
slick
Looks a bit worn to me.
Schurkey
Too bad he didn't photograph the OTHER side of the belt...the important side. Is there a bunch of blackish fuzz under the belt cover? I had a belt that looked reasonably nice on the smooth side, but there was a lot of worn material stuck under the cover; and the tooth profile of the belt showed a lot of obvious wear compared to the nicely-shaped teeth on the new belt. How many miles on it? Might as well expect to have to replace it.
Bake82
I don't know how many miles are on the belt. The car has 88,000 miles, current owner has owned it for 16,000 miles and never changed it. I am thinking it may be original belt based on milage. I can see now it looks a little worn on the smooth side when looking at the pics closer. I can't actually look at it myself as it's 800 miles away from home. I would be planning on driving this home so i am hoping it would be ok for the drive..
Psych0matt
It doesn't look like it's on it's deathbed, but I'd keep it in mind to replace sooner rather than later.
White93z34
That belt needs replaced, period. It should not be running on the edges of the cogs like it is and you can see it being shredded on the outer edge. It at very least has a failed idler pulley. Drive home.. prolly should be okay but that's about all id want to drive it.
GP1138
Yeah, that looks like the belt that was on my 3.4L Cutlass when I bought it. Looks to me like it needs replacing, mine had worn an inspection hole in the cover when I got it and then replaced it.
Bake82
Hmm..ok. If it needs to be replaced asap, I'm not too keen on trying to make an 800 mile road trip home with it. Might not be worth doing unless I get it cheap....thanks for the opinions guys! Kyle
Night Fury
I'd feel safe driving it home, but would want to replace it right away after that.
GOT2B GM
That belt is done.
Galaxie500XL
Having learned the hard way, I'd NEVER buy another LQ1 without immediately replacing the timing belt...unless I was buying it from a fellow W-Body.com member, who could tell me how long the belt has been on the car. You might recall, my Cutlass lasted almost 5 months after I bought it before the belt was toast, and damage ensued. Never again would I buy one without replacing the belt within the first few miles after purchase.
Oilpatch197
Never again would I buy one without replacing the belt within the first few miles after purchase. Is this a interference motor?
55trucker
Is this a interference motor? GM replacement interval is 100,000kms or 60,000 miles. The engines are non interference. The average vehicle owner doesn't usually follow the recommended service intervals so assume that this belt is well overdue for replacement. Galaxie500XL
Well, he said Lumina Z34, which would imply '94 or earlier. My understanding is '95 and earlier LQ1's are non-interference, '96 and up ARE interference. But at the same time, I am aware of some pre-96 LQ1 owners who DID report valve damage when the belt let go at high RPM... When mine failed, I was lucky...it was sitting in my driveway idling. Is this a interference motor?

GOT2B GM
seems spendy for being multicoloured and needing a timing belt..... but otherwise it will likely be clean underneath.
Psych0matt
ooh, I wouldnt pay more than maybe 1k, 1500 tops...
Bake82
Definetly clean underneath...I was thinking 1500-1800......but it is a w-body that needs a t-belt and paint!! even if it is a 5spdZ34
Galaxie500XL
Personally, I think $1800 is kinda high. I only paid $2500 two years ago for my '95 Cutlass LQ1 convertible...and it was in very good condition, other than the crummy timing belt. Of course, it's worth what the BUYER thinks it's worth. Personally, I do wish my Cutlass had come with a 5-speed. Definetly clean underneath...I was thinking 1500-1800......but it is a w-body that needs a t-belt and paint!! even if it is a 5spdZ34
