90lum31v6euro
90 lumina 3.1 with 150k on motor when in drive, i have the worst vibration and rattle from my motor bay i took it to a shop and the guy said that it might be a cracked flywheel when i check my fluid level, its high, very high over the mark could that be over pressure in the tranny, and if so, how do i go about getting that fixed with out spending my next 3 pay checks..? fleetwoodguy79
Having any trouble starting?? If its a cracked flywheel, more than likely the car will NOT start up correctly. Turn the car off and on, if It feels like its jumping the teeth, there is your problem, but highly unlikely. If all the mounts are good, sounds like the tranny is about to go. It the 4T60 or the 4T40?
PaPaPooh
he has a 4t60 check motor mounts first tranny: if it is over full it will have air bubbles in the fluid at operating temp and running
Bear
If you have to much fluid you would be able to tell because it would be foamy, thats only becasue air mixes into it. To see if your flywheel is cracked climb under you car, take off the inspection plate, and look at flywheel.
90lum31v6euro
the car starts fine, and i rechecked my fluid level at idle, and its normal.. the motor mounts are tight, cuz i had to replace one a few months ago this metallic wrapping sounds considerably high up in the motor bay, almost exhaust manifold level high.. ive also noticed that after 20-30 minutes of driving, my engine loses power, almost like its misfiring, or a coil pack is bad, cutting it to 4 cyl. but i had all the coil packs replaces 2 months ago as well, could that be the tranny bogging the motor down, or am i going crazy? 90lum31v6euro
my one friend says it could be a bent valve or something along those lines and i need an engine rebuild, is this so?
RareGMFan
You mentioned you changed the motor mounts, but what about the transmission mount?
Redfox340
my one friend says it could be a bent valve or something along those lines and i need an engine rebuild, is this so? It's not the specifically the valve, but put of your valvetrain. I sounds like you have a problem with either a ticking lifter or rocker arm. That can be from either low oil or a a faulty oil-pump; not being able to lubicate all internal parts. You'll need a head rebuild, not an entire engine tear-down to get rid of the tick. - Erik
90lum31v6euro
if its part of my valve train, then y does the noise go away after i get on the gas? no, i didnt change the tranny mounts, but ive been under there with it running while making the noise, and everything is stable. my oil pump is fine, and i did an oil change 1500 miles ago, and im near perfect on the dipstick concerning oil level. also, would a new exhaust system start to smoke? i only ask this because the other nite, i was driving, and my engine became bogged down to the point where it felt like it was running on 4 cyl. when i got home, smoke was coming from underneath the car at about the cats position. what could this be, and how can it be handled? Redfox340
if its part of my valve train, then y does the noise go away after i get on the gas? If the tick disappears during higher RPM's, then I would lean towards possible fuel injector(s) are fouling out. also, would a new exhaust system start to smoke? i only ask this because the other nite, i was driving, and my engine became bogged down to the point where it felt like it was running on 4 cyl. when i got home, smoke was coming from underneath the car at about the cats position. what could this be, and how can it be handled? No, not really... only if there is residual oil or paper packaging on it. But if you feel your losing power and the catalytic convertor is smoking / glowing red hot, sounds like a plugged cat. Drive around and isolate the issue; when cool, get underneath the vehicle and shake the cat to hear if loose pieces are rattling. - Erik
90lum31v6euro
ok, ur starting to stump me... how on earth can a brand new cat be plugged? i ran into the loss of powere again today, and when i had parked it, and left it idle, and after a few seconds it smoothed out to 6 cyls. it only smoked once for me tho, so i dont think its a sticker or paper packing.. the injectors is an interesting theory, but do injectors make heavy metallic rapping sounds at idle when fouling out..? as u can prolly tell, im greener than a pine needle.. :? everyone that listens to my car says valve tap, and i have no clue how much a head rebuild costs, so i guess when i get my can inspected in teh next few days ill have then check it out prolly the best option.. Redfox340
ok, ur starting to stump me...How on earth can a brand new cat be plugged? I appoligize. I didn't know you had a new cat installed; didn't read that. If you're having issues due to installation, bring it back to the shop and point it out. Nothing wrong asking friendly questions about service and parts. - Erik
90lum31v6euro
im having it inspected thursday afternoon, so ill have the shop obviously look at everything, but my main focus will be on those heads if they cant figure it out, im scrapping the car, taking out my system, and driving my dads 1978 ford truck from now on its actually the most dependable vehicle...... but i dont want to do that would i be able to chang out the injectors myself, or should i take it to a shop cuz while id have the intake manifolds off, ill prolly clean those up real good... not sure thanks for the input, please keep it coming
Slade901
also, would a new exhaust system start to smoke? i only ask this because the other nite, i was driving, and my engine became bogged down to the point where it felt like it was running on 4 cyl. when i got home, smoke was coming from underneath the car at about the cats position. what could this be, and how can it be handled? Smoke coming out of the cat connector? Is it making a loud noise like a screaming banchee when the smoke comes out near the cat connector? Engine shakes like a booty shaking?? I would bet it's a failing cat. If the cat is new then warranty should cover it and have them take a look at the "new" cat they have installed. 90lum31v6euro
when it smoked that one time, it just smoked, no noise, i dont think theres a warranty on the exhaust system, cuz i had a friend of the family who has a small shop at his house do it for me
90lum31v6euro
took it to get inspected, and had a guy listen to it his thought is leaning to the flywheel angle and my pockets arnt that full, and im not too happy he told me right off the bat it wasnt valve tap or the rocker arms pisses me off, cuz i wanted a port and polish out of the deal... :?
