daveppeters
I've got a '96 Lumina (base model) with a 3.1L and I may have a blown head gasket. I'm thinking of taking the opportunity to swap in a 3800 Series II engine instead of repairing the head gasket and have a few questions: 1. Can I do it and could I swap in the L67 Series II (with the supercharger), or would it have to be the L36 (naturally aspirated)? 2. Is it a straighforward swap, or am I going to have to make a bunch of changes/adjustments? 3. What kind of mileage can I expect to get? 4. Is there another engine that would be a better option (like the 3.4L)? I would like to get as much power as I can, but don't want to completely sacrifice my mileage (currently 28-30mpg, but I don't mind it being a bit lower) to do it because I drive a lot for work. Thanks for the input!
virtuetovice
Yes, you should be able to swap in an L67. The question is, will you be willing to do the necessary work involved? From what I understand it will bolt in fine, but there will be some wiring involved. I don't know the FULL detail but there are plenty of people here who do and are very willing to help. I don't think you will see too much of a difference in fuel economy as long as the motor doesn't have any problems and everything is done correctly. Dark Ride
I don't think there would be much of a wiring problem at all, '96 was OBD II already, mainly depends on what vehicle the L67 comes from. Since you asked about another option, the 3400 is very similiar to the 3100 and would probably get better mileage than the L67 at least in town. It would be easier on the tranny than an L67. Probably need to plan on swapping trannies if you go the L67 route. But whether a 3400 would be easier or not, I don't know.
