I once had a 1990 Sunbird with the whole sound system head unit, amp, and all retrofitted in from a Taurus SHO. Wierd but it worked good. Couldn't change CDs while in 1st, 3rd, or 5th - had to shift gears haha. When I got my 1990 Grand Prix SE, I bought a new head unit(with MP3 capability WOW) and pains-taking-ly wired the rest from my Sunbird into it. Why? I was broke and all I could afford was the $40 pawn-shop deal. </story>

Anyway... I learned alot about wiring such as what does a "remote" wire do. So take your time and if you can't solder then crimp. Sometimes if you don't have much for a budget, you can improvise. IMO for long term you'll appreciate clarity over volume!

Andrei, you are not listening. There is a kid right down the street with that same amp, had it for 2 years (his is refurb as well come to think of it) NO ISSUES. Is it amazing? No, but it does the job for a daily system. There.

Their subs...yeah, they don't like rated power. But I used to run all-Sony amps and had zero issues except when I accidentally wired a 4-ohm stable amp to 2 ohms and it insta-protected.

I have a difficult time understanding how I'm the one not listening. That's ironic because I'm the one doing the most talking. You imply I have little to no experience with budget equipment and that I was never poor in my life wanting a better sound system. I once ran two home theater subs in my car off of a power inverter and a high level input splice.

Even as far as equipment goes, there is much better used equipment out there. YOU may have had "decent" experiences with that particular Sony amp (which I'm curious about about considering its pretty old and nobody else sells it), but I and a very large community of car audio enthusiasts have had quite the opposite.

Head over to diyma and see how many people have a single piece of Sony in their car. Pretty much nobody, not even the guys who can't afford anything. Sony is avoided like the plague. Common wisdom over there implies that you're better off saving your pennies and your dimes before going Sony. Ever heard the saying "I'm too poor to be cheap?"

For that price, you could easily find a used Kicker amp, and possibly a used Alpine R12, R10, Kicker CVR, or an MTX sub.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/ele/2464025671.html

Oldschool precision power amps are amazing amplifiers. They last forever and have excellent sound quality. I would take one over any sony piece of crap *ANY* day of the week. Hell, I would take one over the Kenwood 2 channel amps I have right now.

And here's a mono amp that would also do the job:

http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/ele/2438802657.html

If you're going to go refurbished, might as well go used and get some quality equipment. In the end, you'll have spent the same amount and built a MUCH better sounding system that will last you a lot longer.

Oh, and don't be fooled by those power ratings. Some people call them "vintage watts." I call them "rated at 12.6V, not 14.4V." And, they'll actually deliver that power, with extremely low distortion, and in triple digit summer heat without shutting down.

EDIT: found out from this website ( http://www.sonicelectronix.com/chevrolet-monte_carlo-2004-car-speakers.html ) that my front speaker size is 6-3/4"

no idea what that means...all ik is that 6.5 speakers wont work right?

help? lol

EDIT: again....

found this... http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_8702_Kicker-DS650.html if speaker size is 6-3/4" those are what im gettin lol...built in tweeters yo.

idk if i should get the newest kicker speakers...they are $10 more...lol, idc...anything is better than stock right?

I would never buy an amp off craigslist again. One time I bought subs that I found later to be stolen, and one was fucked internally. Another time I bought an amp that fried within a month. You buy refurb, within 90 days, it fucks up, you get a new one.

But that's just me. Do as you wish.

EDIT: just found the sub amp im going to use. http://www.audiosavings.com/products/2-channel-Car-Amplifier/SONY-XM-GTX1852-1000-WATT-2-1-CHANNEL-CAR-AMPLIFIER-AMP/XMGTX1852+RB.aspx so its 1000watts and the sub is 1100 watts...and the headunit has the ability to hook up two amps...so this will work perfect.

"peak" watts are 101% useless. You need to look at RMS ratings. The 6.5" components I bought for my car both have a "peak" of 500W combined, but I can bet your ass they'll play louder bass than that Sony Xplod sub.

Peak ratings are also severely overrated, especially by companies like Sony.

Also, make sure that Sony Xplod sub is a 4 ohm sub.

I used craigslist as an example. Craigslist wasn't the main point of my post. I'm fairly certain you can do the same buying an amp of ebay, which has buyer protection.

ok...im just gonna go through it once more...my entire plan for my audio...in the order that i am going to buy the stuff.

Headunit: http://www.audiosavings.com/products/Double-Din-Car-CD-Player/NEW-JVC-KW-XR610-DOUBLE-DIN-RECEIVER-BLUETOOTH-HD-READY/KWXR610.aspx

my friends sony xplod 1100watt sub in an enclosed box. around $50 right?

normal speakers amp: http://www.audiosavings.com/products/4-Channel-Car-Amplifier/SONY-600-WATT-4-3-2-CHANNEL-CAR-AUDIO-AMP-AMPLIFIER/XMGTX6040+RB.aspx

front speakers: http://www.audiosavings.com/products/6.5-and-6.75-Car-Speakers/KICKER-DS65-6.5-200W-PAIR-OF-COAXIAL-SPEAKERS-11DS65/11DS65.aspx

if i cant buy that sub from my friend i will get this: http://www.audiosavings.com/products/Car-Subwoofer-Amplifier-Packages/VISONIK-VB210PKG-2-10-CAR-SUBWOOFERSAMPLIFIERSUB-BOX/VB210PKG.aspx

and sooner or later i might replace the rear 6X9s with JVCs: http://www.audiosavings.com/products/6x9-Car-Speakers/PAIR-NEW-JVC-CS-HX6947X-6x9-980-WATT-4-WAY-CAR-SPEAKERS/CS-HX6947X.aspx

pretty much i will hookup all 4 of my speakers to that amp, and somehow hookup the sub, unless i get the second sub with the amp then i can just hook the second amp to my HU.

i think its all gonna work out :) thanks for advice guys...

It seems kids these days prefer to learn the hard way even after being given advice repeatedly from those who have 100x more experience than they do.

I'm sure everyone has told you stay away from Sony, but if you get that amp, keep it in an open area, or it will most likely over heat. Thats all I ever hear about sony amps, and my old one did the same in my trunk. And I would recommend a Sony sub over those Visoniks, Sony is crap, but Visonik is worse.

I wouldn't run ANY of that stuff in my car. When it comes to car audio you get what you pay for. FYI you can get that Visonik box for the same price at pep boys I think. Although I have no idea why anyone would buy it in general, would make a good door stop maybe:dunno:

Before you purchase anything I highly recommend that you go somewhere and listen with YOUR ears and find something that YOU like and tell everyone else to stick it. Look up places that are local to you and go have a listen. Bring some music that you listen to and play it there, most places will have no problem with this, just my 2 cents worth.

They may sound amazing to you but you really need to compare to something else to really tell what you might like, I thought Pioneer speakers always sounded good when I heard them by themselves until I heard a comparison to Polk Audio and was amazed at the difference. The Polks absolutely blew away the Pioneers( that I thought sounded good). To this day I have owned nothing but Polk Audio db's. they sound even better amplified, I am using a Alpine 4 channel amp for speakers and an Alpine monoblock for my Apline Type r sub. Just to show that what my sound good to you one day my sound not so good when compared to something else. So go do some comparison shopping and do yourself a favor and open your your ears to other brands.

Better choice on the stereo amp no doubt. Still a company that has a high tendency to severely overrate their products, but a step up no doubt. I once looked into buying their professional amps, but discovered they were pure garbage in that arena and went with a QSC amp instead. Bottom of the barrel, but supposedly stable and reliable at what little power they do deliver.

The sub amp will not deliver more than 200W RMS reliably, no matter what impedance. Might want to find something a little better.

For a front stage, these are about the cheapest I'd even consider using, no matter how low my budget. I'd rather use these and buy rear 6x9's later than buy something cheaper just to have some rear fill.

http://www.amazon.com/Brand-Cadence-Cwm6kit-Component-Speaker/dp/B0053A3UF4

On top of all this, the biggest factor in how your system will sound is your install. The doors need to be deadened/dampened and sealed as well as possible, the sub box needs to be built to spec and not just in a pre-fabbed ported box, the rear deck needs to be deadened/dampened, and the speakers need to be secured with MDF rings, not the factory plastic that sounds like shit.

Failure to do this will result in a crappy sounding system that will likely sound no better than the factory system on an aftermarket head unit.

I have Polk Audio DB5250's up front and DB690's in the rear. Rear fill is severely overrated and should be there only for the comfort of passengers or to support the front sound stage. The 5250's are great for sound quality but lack a bit of midbass. I'm sure other models are much better. They are extremely good value for what they are when given the right amount of power. I've had them for going on 5 years now and will be replacing them asap with a set of Massive Audio RK6's which are waiting in my garage:

http://www.massiveaudio.com/store/product.php?productid=16270&cat=254&page=1

For the record, I used an Alpine R12 for about 3 years as a daily driver sub. I was quite pleased with its performance. I personally wouldn't own one again, but I would certainly recommend them at their price point.

Alpine amplifiers are excellent amplifiers. They are CEA-2006 certified and deliver the power they are rated for stable. I'm also using an Alpine MRP-M1000 to power my 10" sub, though it needs some decent cooling to run properly at maximum output levels.

Comparison shopping is a great idea and I would also highly recommend it.
