lumina38
Hi all, I had a pretty bad clunk from the front end of my '95 Lumina LS 3.8L van. 75k original miles. It would clunk just about all the time. I just replaced the struts and strut mounts with new ones, but I still get a clunk sometimes (less often) from the front right. It happens when I apply the brakes, when turning, going up driveways, etc. I don't believe I installed the stuff wrong. The spring went into its groove correctly. I replaced the inner sway bar bushings and outer tie rods as well. The outer sway bar bushings still need to be replaced, but I doubt that's whats causing this heavy clunk. All parts were original from '95. I did the pads and rotors a while ago too. What could this be? Engine mounts? The control arm bushings and ball joints look good to me. Thanks
Addicted to eaton
the lumina van is not a w-body. But, hey its the same concept. could the transmission mount be shot? Thats where my front end noise came from. also im going to give you some wild ideas that i have came across. is the sub frame bolts tight? Transmission mount superated? is the sway bar broke? hows the ball joint?
ManicMechanic
Check your mounts. My 1995 Silhouette does the same thing and I know I have a bad trans mount.
95 vert
I know this is out there a bit, but I had one that ended up being the hub/bearing. Aftermarket hub would clunk turning and on takeoff.
lumina38
Thanks guys. It looks like my right ball joint is a little loose. Also, the front transmission/engine mount seems worn. If I let go of the brake, let it roll a little, and then apply the brake, the car rocks back and forth and bounces. I thought it was because the shocks were shot, but I changed those and it behaves the same way. Could the mounts attribute to this as well? lumina38
Turned out to be the ball joint. Thanks guys.
