white4d96
Did my rear struts a while back and noticed I was getting a CLUNK on hard bumps. Figured it was my shitty spring shackles and forgot about it. Fast forward to installing my RSTB. Friend notices one strut's screws are poking up less than the other in the trunk. They both got uber tight, whatever, put the RSTB in. CLUNK!! Other day put my backseats down to check if my batt would move in the spot it's in. CLUNK-RATTLERATTLERATTLE! Sounds HORRIBLE! Like something is VERY loose in the suspension. Nobody seems to be able to hear it outside though...is this normal with the RSTB in? I wanna make sure this is okay before driving down to Herrick Lake this weekend. Where should I start?
AL
You need to try and replicate the sound to find out where its coming from... That is not normal
AWeb80
I've never had anyone have problems with the RSTB. Have someone ride in the backseat and the trunk to see if they can hear where it's coming from. I've spent enough time under these cars that I bet I could find it quickly, just not easy when I'm not there.
Addicted to eaton
strut mounts is my guess did you change them too?
white4d96
Changed the mounts as well. Only thing I can think of is my leaf spring shackles but they've been half-on for over a year and I'm just now getting this sound?
jman093
Clunk could be a lot of things. I don't know if it's normal, but I've seen other first gen w bodies where one shock was higher up in the trunk than the other. I know the left side is higher on my GTP. No rust problems, damage problems, ride height problems, alignment is perfect so there isn't anything wrong. IDK, maybe they're all like that if you were to measure it on each side. white4d96
So uh...what would cause a sound like a ball-joint pop in the back of the car? Particularly under/after full compression?
BXX
You dont have the strut rod nut tight enough, Hand tools are rarely adaquate enough to get the strut nuts tight since they are difficult to deal with because the threads are designed to cut together to increase friction so they dont loosen up. white4d96
Impact them on?
AWeb80
I didn't. I just used long wrenches.
BXX
Impact them on? Best and easiest way.
white4d96
Found it. I shattered both bolts holding the rear sway bar mounts to the 'dogbone's on the swaybar.

mra32
Well thats a new one. It didnt sound pretty when my front sway bar to control arm mount broke. A few minutes at the JY and I was back in business
white4d96
Possibly from the Lumina sway bay and the cage brackets? I know the damn thing was so stiff that it took two ratchet straps and a lot of swearing to get it in place.
