bronze93
The trans gave out on my way to my son's baseball tournament this weekend. Does anyone have any tip and tricks to make the install of the new trans easier? I picked up a used trans and torque converter with 90k for $125. It comes with a 90 day warranty so I don't think I did to bad on that. I'm going to replace the filter, fluid, and axle seals while I'm doing it. All help is appreciated. Thanks
Addicted to eaton
undo all the wireing on the motor/starter/ transmission so you can just lay the wireing out of the way. then i jack the car up and set a jack stand at all 4 corners of the sub frame. then i unbolt the 4 18mm bolts from the sub frame to body and put the cherry picker on the body and start lifting it out of the way (slowly) once you get it out from under the car support the motor. and unbolt the trans and slide it off. putting the new one on kinda sucks. But just take your time to line it up it Can be done with one person.. But the transmission is heavy and its nice to have someone help you. i thought i was going to die when i did it my self. alec_b
A second set of hands helps but it can be done by yourself. 4T60's aren't terribly heavy but the weight isn't exactly centered. Anyone ever tried putting in a 4T80 by themselves with nothing but a floor jack? Haha. Don't forget the hidden backwards-facing bell housing bolt that can get people sometimes. Long extension(s) is your friend.

I as im lifting the transmission trying to line it up with the motor while picking the motor up with with the transmission on my knees to it will line up because the transmission mount was in the way... that was pure fun! lol
bronze93
Where is the hidden bolt?
white4d96
You have to access it from the passenger side behind the engine but it's on the driver's side. It's a PITA
bronze93
Is by the steering rack or starter? Also, Do you know what size Torx the studs for the exhaust crossover are? One of the 3 by the starter is bent and I figured as long as I'm in there I might as well fix it.
white4d96
Rack side, by the firewall.
AL
We call that bolt the bitch bolt... You can see it if you look under the crossover but there is no way to access it from the drivers side
bronze93
Trans is out and picked up the used one today. I planned on replacing the filter and drive shaft seals, motor and trans mounts, oil pan gasket, and installing a shift kit. I got those parts on order. I noticed on the passenger side of the subframe there used to be some sort of shield. What is it? Does it mount to the subframe and the body? How do you remove it? I think the Petty car at the junkyard has it. Does anyone keep these on or not worry about them?
