Brake light switch

Have 98 Monte LS. How hard of a job is it to replace the brake light switch? What's the procedure?

Why do you think the brake light switch is bad??????

 

Diagnosis:

Does your third brake light work?

yes? it is the Turn Signal Switch.

no? change the bulb and try again.

 

Install fresh bulb in third brake light does the third brake light now work?

yes? it is the Turn Signal Switch.

no? make sure the contacts for the bulb are clean and try again.

I know it's the switch because it's sticking on. When I pull up on the peddle, the lights go out. Just need to know what it takes to change the switch.

If the switch *opens* when you manually pull up on the brake pedal, why isn't the pedal returning to its normal *off* position by itself?

or the switch just needs adjusted, the whole body of it is threaded, unplug the connector and turn it back a few turns and see if it still does it.

^ That does work. I had to do that on my car. If I pulled up on my brake pedal the brake lights would go off.

Yep, not the switch. I looked at why the peddle was't returning and discovered alot of crud built up around the pivot point. Blew all the crap out and sprayed some silicon on it and no more problem.

Thanks everyone for the info. Saved me a big $3.75 for a new one.
