joecutlass
What are the advantages/disadvantages of a underdrive pulley? Is there a significant gain in power? Ive found a company in canada that makes them. And i cant find them anywhere else.
Dark Ride
Well, it slows the speed of your accessory belt, reducing their drag on the crankshaft. Probably 3 HP tops. Main disadvantage would be the alternator is spinning slower and therefore cannot charge as much without getting too hot.
Schurkey
Water pump spins slower, reduced cooling at idle and low speed. A/C compressor spins slower, might reduce efficiency of A/C system especially at idle and low speed. Overall...TOTAL WASTE OF TIME with virtually no upside. 3.1cutlass
Overall...TOTAL WASTE OF TIME with virtually no upside. Absolutely false... The motor revs much more quickly and the throttle response is much higher than stock. I have had mine for ~2 years without a single issue. 19Cutlass94
The motor will rev more quickly, and FFP had dyno results of 8whp. However it has no damper...
BXX
The motor will rev more quickly, and FFP had dyno results of 8whp. However it has no damper... The 1mm thick hard rubber on our stock pulleys doesnt do shit for dampening other than accessory drive harmonics. Its not a harmonic balancer by any means. A 3800 is a much different story. And im yet to hear of anyone having cooling system or charging system issues with UDPs on our cars Shurkey. If anyone is really really concerned aboot the slight chance of having charging issues at low idle, then MRZ makes a smaller altenator pulley as well. 19Cutlass94
Because a harmonic balancer and a damper are two different things... But im not getting into this arguement again for the 8 millionth time on this forum...
jman093
Had an FFP UD on the GTP since I bought the car almost 60,000 miles ago. 0 problems with charging/cooling/ac at idle.
joecutlass
So would an 8hp gain be worth $135 or is there a better way to go about gaining hp?
jman093
IMO they're worth the price a few extra ponies.
Dark Ride
Swapping on an underdrive pulley is about as easy as it gets, so if you looking for bolt-on hp go for it (may even get a slight increase in MPG as well). My charging note was mainly intended for if he planned to install a sound system, it would then IMO become a factor.
Schurkey
So would an 8hp gain be worth $135 or is there a better way to go about gaining hp? Probably get more than that by shutting off the A/C and defroster. Free.
