regalman
I want to replace the front struts. I noticed when looking at them , they have 'strut covers", I have never seem those before, are they hard to get off? I take it the the rest of the procedure is the same. I read that year vehicle has replaceable strut cartridges, should i consider replacing those, or swap the struts? Thanks
Galaxie500XL
I'm assuming you mean the pie-pan shaped covers on the top of the struts? They'll pop right off.
regalman
Thanks, it looks like the covers go all the way down to the ball joint.
mfewtrail
You just replace the cartridges inside the strut housings. Go here, and select the appropriate sections to see the strut removal procedure. http://arrc.epnet.com/autoapp/8800/8800.htm Do not jack up the car while replacing the front cartridges. Leave the car on the ground and park with the wheels straight. Then follow the procedure listed there. You can rent the tools needed to replace the cartridges from most larger parts chains, then get your money back once you return the tools.
