97Corsitruck
So my 1997 Lumina, 3100, just got done with a top end rebuild on her. Now im running her and lettin her stretch her legs and slowly taking on a few smaller repairs n what not, but she runs great, except my service engine soon light comes on randomly, usually when the cars warmed up and i shut it off and fire it back up again. havent checked the codes yet, but i will in the morning. in the mean time, when running the wireharness with the o2 sensor, coil plugs and egr/throttle body plugs, i came across this one plug, red and blue, with no idea where to plug it in. tore it apart again tryin to figure it out, but i was lacking sleep so maybe i missed it.. but i have pictures of the plug, can anyone help me? its a long lead off the wrapped harness, my friend seems to think its for the transmission, but everything except the VSS sensors should be in the trans plug, correct? Not sure if its related, but since i completed the top end rebuild, the cooling fans arent working, including when the A/C is on. I drive the car on the freeway mainly at night and i dont let it idle so its not a big deal, but it would be better if i could figure out why the fans arent on. Will be troubleshooting the CTS when i wake up tomorrow to see if thats the problem. Also, an intermittent SES light. Light comes on mainly when car is warmed up and i cycle the ignition quickly, goes off when i let the car cool down. Can anyone help me please? Thanks! white4d96
I have a similar plug with no home. I think mine's linked to my oil level sensor but I can't find the damn other plug!
tornado_735
It's for testing the fuel pump. I don't know how it's done, but it's not supposed to be plugged into anything.

Crazy K
TWO PRONG + RED = SENSOR FUEL PUMP TEST LEAD NOT USED IN OBD2 VEHICLES! This looks like it might go to the purge valve, which is hidden behind the coil packs.

I agree with Crazy, the purge valve solenoid, is right behind the coil pack, in fact you will see two screw posts that holds the purge solenoid behind the coil pack. Grab a flash light and make sure you have a electrical connector hooked up to it. I do remember two vacuum lines would pop out of the purge solenoid and would cause a intermittent check engine light. I just grabbed some electrical tape, and it fixed it.

97Corsitruck
thanks for the replies guys. Yeah I dont know a whole lot about the wiring on this thing, its my second 97 lumina, but the first time ive had to pull all the wiring back there apart. right below my coil pack studs on the head is the exhaust manifold, so unless this valve your talking about is back under there, i cant for the life of me find where it goes. i honestly dont remember that plug one little bit from pulling it apart (i pulled it apart twice, once for the LIM gaskets, and then again when i discovered the blown headgaskets/cracked heads) as for the cooling fans, none of the wiring i can see goes to that damn plug, as that plug is on the engine harness coming from the firewall, im hoping yall are right and it doesnt go to anything, as for my SES light coming on, ill be having the codes read when i git home from work (i work nights), and i thought the oil level was in the oil pan? oilpressures right above the oil filter aint it? still workin on it though. The cars runnin great, though when i first start her ever day she idles rough when i press on the brake, but after i quick spin, problem goes away no worries, brakes work great, vacuum issue? Hopin to figure out the problem soon. Thanks again, guys! EDIT: I Found it! Im a dumbass sometimes what can I say, I plugged it in, but i dont have a wrench so ill have to wait til I git home from work to reset the codes, then we'll see what happens. Thanks guys, It WAS the Purge Solenoid! On to the SES light and cooling fans Edited May 11, 2011 by 97Corsitruck
Galaxie500XL
The other issues may possibly be related to the missing plug. In fact, I'm very certain they are. When I first got my Cutlass, I had a Quad Driver "A" failure, and the fans were doing strange things. I seem to recall the FSM said something about the two being related. Turned out I had an open winding in the purge solenoid. Once I replaced the solenoid, the problem went away. dodgethis
yea, i wouldn't doubt the SES would go away if its just in regard to the solenoid being un plugged, unless you have other codes stored, but you mentioned it goes on and off, so i think you have found the problem.
