DFickel Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 My sis just bought a 00 grand prix with 80000 miles, hell yes i know. I have a lumina ltz ive had for 5 years now so ive got a pretty good grip on how to treat her car in the shop. Her brakes are shot though, and I know the parking brake on the back has caused some issues. What if any are the problems related with changing pads and rotors on rear brakes, and are there any hints you may have. Also, I'm lookin to convert my lumina to disc brakes all around, so if anyone knows of a conversion kit let me know, thanks Quote
Andrew Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 (edited) the rears are easy to replace. Might want to replace the calipers as well if the parking brake is sticking. as for your LTZ, there are plenty of Lumina's of the same gen that have rear discs. Just go rob one in the JY for the conversion. Edited May 10, 2011 by Andrew Quote
DFickel Posted May 10, 2011 Author Report Posted May 10, 2011 oh no there isn't anything wrong with the parking brake, I just wondered with that mechanism being on those rear disc would it cause any trouble taking off the calipers and rotors off. Some people have said it was a pain. As for the ltz, i just need the caliper, rotor, caliper mount like the front i assume, and thats about it right? just yank off the drums and the other stuff should bolt right on? Quote
White93z34 Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 The 00 will have drums and discs. It has a drum in the rotor just for the park brake, then it has regular old calipers for the rear brakes, those can be changed like any disc brake pad. Quote
DFickel Posted May 10, 2011 Author Report Posted May 10, 2011 ya thats what ive seen, but to get the rotor out does this parking brake drum get in your way any? Quote
AL Posted May 13, 2011 Report Posted May 13, 2011 No, I havent seen it be an issue before... But for your disc brake swap, youll need the whole rear knuckle assembly if I am not mistaken Quote
DFickel Posted May 13, 2011 Author Report Posted May 13, 2011 knuckle assembly? could you elaborate on that, i was just gettin pads and rotors, prob need a torx head set if there are caliper mounts over the rotor? Quote
Dirkdaddy Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 The knuckle is where the strut and trailing arm bolts up to, holds the disk brake carrier and that the caliper, if you have drums it will likely be different. I have one (maybe two I forget) from my '00 intrigue where I had rust on rear suspension and replaced it with whole assembly from a JY. Had parts left over. The parking b is inside the rear disk and works very simply on a cable with a lever, no hydraulics. I have two disks as well I can include. great condition. Brakes are rear are same as other disk brakes for most part just smaller. work excellent. You'll also need matching master cylinder I am almost certain. Looking to get rid of parts soon, PM me. Quote
jimmyfloyd Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Correct, it isn't as simple as removing the drum and installing the disc onto it. The drum brake spindle doesn't have the provisions for the caliper bracket, and the hub itself is different I believe. And I believe it's the Proportioning valve, not the master that needs to be replaced up front. Quote
Dirkdaddy Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 OK I checked and I have: 2 rear spindles off '00 Intrigue with rear disk brake 2 rear hubs (attached) both good with ABS wires 2 rear disk brake rotors, used but very good, no ridges or grooves on either inside or outside, or drum brake area The spindles have the brake stuff for parking brake built-in, you just need the cable stuff to hook it up. Let me know if you're interested, lets make a deal. Quote
Dirkdaddy Posted June 7, 2011 Report Posted June 7, 2011 He didn't buy anything so I still have for sale. Anyone wanting it let me know. Quote
