npfd Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 hey, I'm really starting to get fed up with parking brake problems, its been several times that I've been adjusting it, trying to get it right... if I don't tighten it enough it feels like the back brakes don't work as well... if I tighten it just right, then the driver side brake doesn't release because there's a part that is rusting after the adjustment screw. I'm wondering would any place just sell the driver side cable, right after the adjustment? I must mention that inside the car, the metal sleeve is rusted out due to water leaks. I was told that we have to use the parking brake, in order to keep the rear pads adjusted... Personally I don't want to use the parking brake anymore.... but if the pads need adjustment... Thanks. 55trucker Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 Well, if you don't not make use of the park brake on a regular basis the assembly will seize on you making the problem even worse. Even properly adjusted this design was never to be considered a very good setup. For my part, with the brake fully on I can still move the rear wheels when the trans is in gear. Proper adjustment of the cables is when the brake is fully released you should be able to get a 1/16" shim between the (lever)arm on both calipers & the stop on the caliper housing. Now, mind you everything has to be able to move freely, if either of the cables or the park brake levers are seized in any way it will be difficult to get that. Rockauto is the best source for to browse via web for the parts & probably the best price as well as a lot of these cars parts can be had there at closeout prices. Quote
npfd Posted May 4, 2011 Author Report Posted May 4, 2011 Hey Steve, Thanks for the input, I didn't know about the 1/16" shim.. good to know. We make use of the parking brake all the time, I'm surprised things still seize up sigh..... The front cable is messed cause of water in the car rusting out the sleeve. The cable is binding.. we put springs on the adjuster and bracket to pull the cable back enough, as it doesn't release well without it. I tried spraying wd-40, and using 3in1 oil on the metal sleeve and still hasn't helped with lubrication. The issue is we live in Canada here and shipping from Rockauto is expensive. At this point we're thinking of cutting the sleeve of the rear driver side cable.. I don't know how we will go about it... maybe pipe cutter and then remove the rubber casing.... Thanks! Quote
55trucker Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 (edited) I'm in Oshawa..know well what you're going thru. Corrosion is a wonderful thing (NOT!) Rockauto can be a good source, you just have to look for the closeouts (remember that anything under $20 Can ...there is no tax at all), they will add on HST over $20 so you won't get hit with additional delivery service fees from either Fedex or UPS. Trick is to make sure that what you order on a single order comes from the same warehouse source so your ship fees are as low as possible and don't reflect multiple source ship fees..... to make the purchase worthwhile. I keep this link handy all the time. When making a purchase I'll load up on these low priced items, even my shop discount I get from my local supplier can't touch these prices at all. http://www.rockauto.com/RSS/vehiclefeeds.php?carcode=1255711&m=wc&l=en&html=true Edited May 4, 2011 by 55trucker Quote
