MotorCityFats
I have a 97 Lumina with the 3.1L VIN code M.... I would like to know the GM vehicles that share this same engine. I know that they changed to say roller lifters around 96-97.. what engines would be direct bolt in replacements to my engine... I know GM must have used the 3.1L in countless models and I would like to find a donor car with a compatible engine so mine does not have to be pulled until I am ready. Any info would be awesome and thank you for reading!

joecutlass
And here's a rundown from wikipedia. And wikipedia can sometimes only be considered, not completely trusted. The engine is an L82 Applications 1994–1999 Buick Century 1994–1996 Buick Regal 1994–1996 Chevrolet Beretta 1994–1996 Chevrolet Corsica 1995–1999 Chevrolet Lumina 1997–1999 Chevrolet Malibu 1993–1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme(1993 received both LH0 and L82 3.1 L motors) 1994–1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera 1994–1999 Pontiac Grand Prix 1994–1998 Pontiac Grand Am 1994–1998 Buick Skylark 1994–1998 Oldsmobile Achieva 1995–1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_60-Degree_V6_engine <link
MotorCityFats
will a 1998 3100 be a plug and play install.... for some reason the 98's are cheaper than the 97's....... my engine did not hold out as long as I was hoping.... but I guess now I can pull it and see what went bad... I am sure it was a rod bearing some wheres around cyl #6 because is stopped knocking when you pull the plug wire but now its just knocking like crazy after about 15 minutes of running
Crazy K
it SHOULD work... i don't think any change made makes it not swappable... alternatively, you could just unplug the injector for the failed bearing and see if you can eak a little more life from the current engine... it sucks, but i've driven 200 miles with a failed injector unplugged... RobertISaar
if you want guaranteed 100% interchangability, grab one from a 96-99 W-body.
MotorCityFats
I tried driving with 1 plug off... made it the 6 miles to work fine.... the 6 miles home 4 hours later was hell the knock came back it stalled 6 times and would not go over 10mph with out giving you the idea it was the last run... after it cools off for a day its the same thing over again but the knock is getting worse.... Im looking at a 99 3100 and hopefully that means less miles.... Ill still break down my old one before I buy a new one and break down the new one a little bit... if anything I should do the intake gaskets and maybe head gaskets.... I forgot can someone give me a break down of the 96-99 w-body cars.... I am not really sure on what is considered a w-body other Buick Regal, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Pontiac Grand Prix, Chevrolet Lumina, Monte Carlo, Buick Century, Buick Regal, Oldsmobile Intrigue, Pontiac Grand Prix let me know if I forgot one and I would need any of these in 96-99 Edited April 26, 2011 by MotorCityFats
