282 swap advice thread

I bought Andrei's 282 parts, getting ready to do this swap as soon as I get all the parts together. Which is the issue.

-Clutch pedal. Can't find one. Can I sub one from another car?

-Clutches. What are you 5-speed guys running? I'll likely be putting an I/H/E 3500 on it at the most, but I do drive rather aggressively.

-Firewall plate. Anyone got pics of the holes that need to be cut, or better yet, a template?

-People that have converted, how do I get around the NSS and the 4k rev limiter?

the PCM should be cakewalk, Bob should know all about that I think a 97' Lumina PCM is the route he likes to go and set it up with HPtuners and from there it should be east to disable all the ATX crap.

I run a spec stage 2 in my z34, I absolutely love the thing... 10,000 mils on it so far and it works as good now as it did day one.

in a 96' you will either need to make a clutch pedal bracket or modify a older brake/clutch bracket to fit.

you will need a 88-93 brake booster so the clutch MC will fit, buy that new, used ones suck 9 times outa 10

Inttern8ia9l modified his firewall plate to fit the clutch master as seen here: http://www.w-body.com/showthread.php/48709-intern8tion9l-s-TGP-thread/page5

i prefer to swap the plate entirely but its not super necessary if you don't mind modding.

Here are some of my old 5 speed swap threads should have some valid information yet.

Chris, thank you. Its great to know someone has been here before not once, but twice. I may have to bug you some to figure some stuff out

Ouch, 323 for the clutch. That will be a big-ticket item. Better than having to replace it though.

Would any flywheel work? I found some on ebay listed to fit a 90 GP for cheap bnib.

Of course, all those pale in comparison to the clutch/brake pedal issue. I think if worst comes to worst I could cut the brake pedal, but then the clutch pedal is an issue yet

Yeah, with you being a 96 car, I can send you a 97 Lumina PCM already flashed to run the LX9 decent and also deal with the 5-speed manual (and disable some emissions junk in the process and other things:D) and that will be plug and play.

From there, just minor rewiring for the trans for the reverse lights, clutch safety (if you intend to even use that) and the VSS. Although I think the VSS uses the same wiring connector.

For the bracket for the clutch pedal, from what Ken has said, all early Gen 1s already had the spot cast into the bracket, so all you need to do is add the clutch pedal.

Cool.

Here's an issue though: I will be learning to drive stick on this setup. My thoughts: I will almost certainly kill whatever clutch I put in there in the process. Should I put a cheapo in and save the Spec for when I learn to not fuck up at it? Or do you think the Spec would handle it?

More people ruin clutches from years of driving the car like shit when they think they know how to then people learning to drive stickshift. You should be fine maybe find something to practice on in the meantime or have someone who knows already to take it for its test run.

and remember you are not supposed to beat on a new clutch for the first 1000 miles.

Cool beans.

This biggest headache is still this damn clutch pedal. Could someone maybe take pics of theirs and how it's mounted? I may go yard crawling sometime this or next week and see if I can find a pedal from another car I can adapt to it, eBay's not finding a GP pedal except for G-bodies and the only 282'd car I've seen here EVAR got crushed.

Lulz.

Let's hope I don't totally trash this transmission when I get it in the car.

I'm half tempted to go with my brother to 'test drive' a car and have him teach me =P

I taught myself in my 90 Nissan Sentra without hurting the trans or clutch. Worse thing I did was just stall it. And that was a car with manual steering too which added to the excitement:lol:

Oh what I would do for manual steering...

I would ask my bro to teach me in his Integra, but it's got a 4-puck solid-hub jobber in it. Fucker's like an on-off switch.

NEGATIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALL GEN 1 cars that had SQUARE columns ONLY! But a bracket was modified to make it fit into a round column car before... i can make you a modded bracket and include it when Andrei gets the transmissions... but i have no spare pedals... :thnking: wonder if i can make one....

i have the spec stage 3. next time around i'd prob go with the 2, this thing is very track oriented. not much slip, it just wants to be engaged or disengaged. i modified my firewall plate because i REALLY didn't want to take the entire dash, brake, and environmental stuff out. as far as a flywheel, i used one for a 2.8L
