biddieboi
I have a 1996 chevy lumina and its equipped with the 3.1 v6 engine. I have done all my major services like spark plugs, wires, oil and filter etc but my motor stalls and hesitates and stutters at times. I just got the head gaskets replaced less then 1000 miles ago. aI had head work done and the mechanic said everything was cool. It did this before the head gaskets went out too. I have cleaned the throttle body and when the engine was torn down the cylinder walls didnt have excessive scoring or ridge or anything. My engine has over 262000 miles on it. Should i do a compression test on it to determine ring condition as well as head status? Are my fuel injectors getting bad? And also my transmission hits hard when i give her the beans. She accelerates rather well but that 1st to 2nd gear is HARSH. My trans fluid is good and clean and at the appropiate level and no funny odor or smells from it. It did have a slight leak but i slightly tightened the bolts on the pan and added some transmission sealant but it is probably time for a transmission flush with dexronIV right? i know am asking a lot of questions i just want her right and smooth. Thanks in advance.
BXX
At 262,000 miles its prolly best to start looking for a newer car in my opinion. For the trans, leave it alone. Its on its way out. Flushing it will prolly kill it off for good. Plain and simple, the only thing prolly keeping the old clutches in it working halfway right at that mileage is all the friction material floating around in the fluid (nothing you can see by the eye) For the engine, it could be anything from the crank/cam sensor, ICM and/or coils, MAF failure, fuel pump dying or low fuel system pressure, TPS intermittant issue...... well you get the point. Do you have an SES light on? Either way, check for history or pending codes, and not all codes trigger the SES light, so you will need to get a scan tool on it to check. And no matter what, youll prolly need a scantool to diag the issue that can capture freezeframe date that you can view when the issue happens. biddieboi
I found out what was up with it. For the transmission the mechanic just plugged the hose that runs from the intake manifold to the transmission. I got a new hose and connected it and no problems. And as for the stalling one i had a bad spark plug and two the vacuum hose thats located under the bracket of the throttle cable was way pass loose. The grommet inside it was bad so i replaced that too. Now that motor PURRS like a kitten and shifts flawlessly and the motor was rebuilt so i will be running at least another 100,000 miles. biddieboi
ok i take it back the car is stuttering and surging at times again. the SES light comes and goes. AND i have a KNOCK coming from the rear of the motor. And my trans is leaking fluid. Dont know that exactly to do. Getting annoyed. Any suggestions? i need to check for codes again. what should i be looking for? it has a steady knock from the rear exspecially when warmed up. the knock isnt crazy loud but i hear it. 313hitman
if the knock is slight, its probably a bad lifter. when the engine was rebuilt was the oil pump assembly replaced? and did you put new seals on the trans while the engine was out? Addicted2bass
Probably just a lifter tick. Happens on pretty much every 3100. Considering the mileage im surprised it hasnt been like that for awhile. Its not gonna hurt anything and is not worth fixing, especially considering the mileage. Galaxie500XL
Years ago I had a car that did what you'd described, and the timing chain was stretched beyond belief. Got worse when hot. Given the car has 226,000 miles on it, I'd say it's a strong possibility. But, since it's such a royal pain to get to, I'd make sure everything else is OK before I tore into it... biddieboi
wel drove the lumina today and the stuttering is worse today. I can be cruising at relatively low speeds and when I get in it just to simply overtake a car I can because it jerks and sputters and hesitated BAD. It's like the fuel is being restricted the more I get into the gas. And I don't understand. And the mechanic didn't replace the oil pump or any seals or valvetrain or anything. So that's wat I get and at 263k it's probably done. Having the head gaskets done bougt me a measily 4 or 5 months tops.
