Myotis1134
It's breakup season in AK, and I was having the same problem as szczur, with the mystery stalls. I thought it was coil or ignition module related, due to the stall happening immediately or soon after driving through water, and after waiting for an hour or two, starting the thing up and driving away like nothing happened. Checked out a few posts, and decided to replace the crank sensor, which turned out to be cracked, but after doing so the car will turn over and act like it wants to start, but won't. Replacing the module and coil packs all at once with AC Delco, which hurts a little at $415.00, but it's been a few years. I do want to get the setup away from the ground (who's genius idea was it to place that system right there anyways?), but my options appear to be to move either the battery to the trunk, or make the coolant reservoir tank smaller. If the battery is the best solution, then does anyone know of a decent relocation kit? and if the reservoir tank is the way to go, then does anyone know how small the replacement tank can be, before it won't do the job? Crazy K
If you have not already bought new coils and modules... Go buy some used ones from a 3100 or 3400 that have them on top of the engine. they are the same part. last but not least, did you check to make sure that the wiring between the crank sensor and module is not damaged? Myotis1134
I installed a new crank sensor connector along with the sensor itself, but that replaced just the end of the wiring of course. I will check all the wiring tonight. I wish I could find parts for my car at a salvage yard- that's yet another annoying thing about living in Kenai, all the salvage yards are in Anchorage. Lots of junked cars and trucks on people's property, but no yards. So assuming that the wiring is not damaged, and either one or all of the coil packs and the ignition module are toast, and it is in my best long-term interest to move the ignition module and coils somewhere they won't be exposed to every-freaking thing nature or the exhaust manifold can throw at them, then where is the best location? Crazy K you said 3100 and 3400s have them on top of the engine. I will look into that, and see where they are. I guess that's a good place to start. Crazy K
I would just leave them where they are to be honest... and If you need parts, i have at least ten full sets of coils and ICMs lying around.:lol: plus they still last 100,000+ miles by the exhaust manifold with ease. so far I lost two that were in that location, one at 195,000, the other at 150,000... pick your battle! I think you need a new crank to ICm wire if you had to repair the end, i did that once and it made the car run like crap. repairing it can make it susceptible to interference... Another member once stated they thought they had the same issue. i can get you a good wire if you need it too....
