bez Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 I have a 1996 buick regal with a blown 3.1L and a 1994 pontiac grand am with a 2.3L quad with a blown trans, both have the 4t60e trans. will the trans out of the buick work in the grand am. they look the same other than the electronics for the shifter on the buick Quote
Crazy K Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 1994 n-body 2.3 transmission: 2 options: 4CLW 3.43 FDR, 33/37 chain ratio, 3.06 differential, 2095 stall speed (6 bolt side cover) 4PHW 3.73 FDR, 33/37 chain ratio, 3.33 differential, 2363 stall speed (6 bolt side cover) 1996 w-body 3800 transmission: 6HBW 3.06 FDR, 35/35 chain ratio, 3.06 differential, 1897 stall speed (4 bolt side cover) You will have alot of work to do in order to make your regal transmission fit the grand am. the hardest thing to do will be to change the chain ratio. This would require partial disassembly of both transmissions. Everything else is simple work, assuming the transmission plug is the same. basically change the differential if different, and use the 2.3's torque converter. If you could not find a grand am with the correct transmission, the next closest transmission you could use with the right chain ratio is from a 94-95 W-body with a 3.4, and then that would be practically plug and play(pending wiring verification), unless you must change the diff: 4CMW/5CMW 3.43 FDR, 33/37 chain ratio, 3.06 differential, 2060 stall speed (4 bolt side cover) BUT... What IS wrong with the 94's transmission? Quote
bez Posted April 4, 2011 Author Report Posted April 4, 2011 sounds like the chain is about to come out, grinding and popping at all speeds Quote
