white4d96 Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 The rust is back on the TA mounts. They aren't holey, but they are starting to pit. Last summer I wire wheeled them, rust primer'd, then grey primer'd, and epoxy'd, but obviously that didn't help. I was thinking about 'boxing' them with some steel plate, would this be a good idea? Or should I just give up and start looking for a shell? Quote
94 olds vert Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 Well as long as they are not rusted through, or weak in any spots they still should be fine. Quote
mra32 Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 Get a mig welder and some angle iron. Then you have mega trailing arm mounts Quote
white4d96 Posted March 21, 2011 Author Report Posted March 21, 2011 They aren't weak yet (although they are dented in from my first failed attempts at lifting the car ) but I don't want them to get that way. Mra you and I are on the same page I think Quote
AliasCT Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 Go to a J/Y and grab a pair for cheap... Why have the headache? Or use this as a good time to upgrade to sturdier trailing arms. Quote
AL Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 Go to a J/Y and grab a pair for cheap... Why have the headache? Or use this as a good time to upgrade to sturdier trailing arms. The trailing arm mount attaches directly to the frame of the car and the frame of the car is what gets rusty... Upgrading arms will not help his problem Quote
AliasCT Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 Apparently I suck at info retention... I did read that, and then apparently forgot all about it... Quote
white4d96 Posted March 25, 2011 Author Report Posted March 25, 2011 What Al said. Although I will be taking the opportunity to get new TA's while I'm at it I think. The Dorman ones are good right? Quote
94 olds vert Posted March 25, 2011 Report Posted March 25, 2011 I have the Dorman arms. They are square (boxed in). They are just a little better than factory arms. Quote
white4d96 Posted March 26, 2011 Author Report Posted March 26, 2011 That would be what I'm looking for. Either way i'm sure they're better than 15-year-old crusty stockers Quote
Dark Ride Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 Please post pictures of what you do, I'm VERY curious to see how people are overcoming this problem without using a crusher. Quote
white4d96 Posted March 28, 2011 Author Report Posted March 28, 2011 I definitely will, don't worry. However, I probably won't be doing it for at least a month or two, until it finally warms up outside. Quote
white4d96 Posted April 3, 2011 Author Report Posted April 3, 2011 Had the car on a lift at my alma mater so I shot some current pics: Concerning the salt crusted everywhere: it's been washed twice since these pics were taken yesterday morning. Quote
BXX Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 You call that cancer:lol::lol: You should see the Wbodies that end up on my lift at work Quote
94 olds vert Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 Yeah those dont look bad at all. Spray some wd 40 on them. Quote
Night Fury Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 Yeah I've personally seen much worse..... That's borderline surface rust not to mention it's not actually at the mount. Quote
white4d96 Posted April 3, 2011 Author Report Posted April 3, 2011 The driver's side one has a big crack in it. I'll have to grind them down and take another pic showing the damage. Quote
intern8tion9l Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 yeah those look pretty spactacular for the w-body world Quote
white4d96 Posted April 6, 2011 Author Report Posted April 6, 2011 I would still rather build them up before they become unsaveable. Quote
Go4DaMo Posted April 11, 2011 Report Posted April 11, 2011 Youre on crack to think those are an issue. You've got a decade left on those mounts before your car starts dogleggin down the highway one day and you realize what's wrong. Perhaps your car's in TOO good of shape and you're getting bored with it being so low maintenance If you absolutely have to do something to help yourself sleep at night, oilbathin em like Ken said would be helpful. But rest easy, my man. Quote
white4d96 Posted April 11, 2011 Author Report Posted April 11, 2011 (edited) They aren't an issue yet. But I don't want them to EVER be. Not to mention this car hasn't been in Wisconsin for more than 5 years and they look like this already. And I'm sure you know once you start to see the rust it starts comin hard. Go4DaMo Posted April 12, 2011 Report Posted April 12, 2011 Speakin of comin hard, are you goin to the Dayton meet? Quote
white4d96 Posted April 13, 2011 Author Report Posted April 13, 2011 lolwut? I should be able to make it. Quote
white4d96 Posted August 12, 2011 Author Report Posted August 12, 2011 In 4 short months these have gotten ugly. I'm thinking trying to blast them with some rust encapsulator/converter type stuff like POR15 or Eastwood frame coating, then welding some thick steel around them and boxing them up. Opinions? Quote
