Psych0matt
So I was taking a mini road trip to pick up some wheels, and out of nowhere its been dying once I get up to speed. It's as if when I get up to about 65-70 the car says OMGOMGWTF I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO ANYMORE and wants to stall. It seems like it runs rough right before. If I hold right about 60 it'll drive just fine, but if I try to speed up it wants to get really rough and act like its gonna die. If I ease into it though I can get it up to 70 or so before it starts getting rough. Around town though it still seems to be fine for the most part, although once into 3rd and sometimes second it acts like it wants to be all rough when it's about ready to shift, but still shifts pretty much fine. I'm completely stumped. It died a few times tonight, and half the time it'd start right back up, the other half it would crank a lot before finally catching, and then would idle completely normal. I have a few thoughts, but what do you guys think?
dodgethis
Fuel Pump?
Psych0matt
Fuel Pump? That was actually my first thought, was not getting enough fuel. Sucks that I work all weekend and wont have time til monday. I'll change out the filter if I don't figure anything else out
dodgethis
i haz Wix Filter, I like it.
AL
coil, bad plugs/wires possibly
Psych0matt
My other thoughts were coils/Icm, alternator (quickly rejected), ECM, but ultimately my brain keeps thinking fuel delivery.
Psych0matt
although come to think of it, it was running really rough last fall and new plugs fixed that, I wonder if something is causing the plugs to foul out. That wouldn't make as much sense though since it idles completely normal
ScoobyDoo82
If it was the fuel pump, wouldn't it act poopy if you just revved it to freeway RPMs parked?
Night Fury
If it was the fuel pump, wouldn't it act poopy if you just revved it to freeway RPMs parked? No, that takes much les fuel than it does under load. What does it do under WOT?
spiderw31
I'd guess fuel pump, coils/icm, or plugs/wires. I know, I've listed a bunch of things ... Like Buck asked, does it run OK at WOT or at the top end of any gear?
Psych0matt
it seems like the top end of the gears is when it starts acting goofy. I was thinking transmission, but it shifts completely fine. I'll pay closer attention on the way to work today
urbex
I doubt it's the case, but did you put fuel stabilizer in it? Bad fuel? That would probably cause more idling problems...
Psych0matt
nope, haven't added anything
urbex
Well, then it could be bad gas...I mean who knows. About a year ago I had my Lumina put away for just about 2 months, so I didn't put anything in the tank...it ran terrible until I put fresh gas in. So, you never know. Psych0matt
I'll have to put gas in today anyways. Just started doing it either wednesday or yesterday. I guess it could be bad gas. Hopefully I'd be lucky enough to have it be something as simple
urbex
I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya!
Psych0matt
Seems to be just fine shifting and at higher rpms, until I try to level off and cruise. Today I was doing about 75 Just fine, but at one point I tried to accelerate from 70-80 and it tried to sputter, but I let off and it was ok. I have an occasional surging at idle, and have developed a slight roughness, but otherwise normal. I have a slight alignment issue so its hard to tell if at 75 it's engine or ride that's rough I'm gonna try to grab a fuel filter tonight perhaps, cuz I'm thinking maybe that
mra32
I may be way off, but nobody has suggested cat yet...
urbex
I don't know if it's anything similar...but my Lumina would surge and sputter when I was going about 50, and would accelerate, or when I would use the cruse around 70, or going up hills. It would do it more often when it was wet outside. I fixed two things, so not sure which fixed it...but I replaced the vehicle speed sensor, and after that I noticed the lid to the PCM was half off, so water may have gotten it wet. Either way, it hasn't done it since. Either way a fuel filter never hurts, and more than likely it's probably pretty old on that car. Breakdown
I may be way off, but nobody has suggested cat yet... Could be, but I'm thinking not. BGA and I both had big gay clogged cats suffocating our cars at the last Dayton meet (me much worse than him) and my car wouldn't shift at all at higher RPMs. It also never stalled, just wouldn't accelerate as if the torque converter had locked in or something to that effect. I'm assuming that this is the Sedan that's doing this NCM???
urbex
Oh, what car are you talking about? For some reason I just assumed the GTP. Otherwise if it's the sedan I'm doubting the bad gas theory....
Psych0matt
Yeah, definitely the sedan I forget that on here the GTP is what most of you know
Night Fury
Yeah I was thinking of the wrong damn car!!
AL
I was thinking GTP at first also... When you said it had delayed shifts, I started thinking "Well then shift it!!!" But then I realized you were talking about the sedan lol
Psych0matt
@ the misunderstanding! Today it drove fine, aside from what I suspect is a wheel bearing going bad. I cruised about 70 or so all the way to work and it was fine. On the way home, basically the same thing. At one point I sped up to about 80-85 at a normal rate and it was fine. As I got close to home, I decided to try to do it fairy fast, and I got to about 80 and it stalled. Put it into neutral, started right back up, and was on my way. Got up to about 70 just fine again. One last time I hard accelerated to about 85 and it was perfectly fine. WTF? I'm gonna change the filter Monday, but otherwise I'm still kinda stumped.
