urbex
Hey guys. So I have a question... When I back my car out of the driveway or a parking spot, usually if it's been sitting for a few days, or is raining as I apply the brakes the rear drums make a loud god-awful grinding noise. It's so loud I have people probably over 100 yards or more away turn and look at me! We've taken the drums apart and looked them over real good, and don't see anything wrong with them. Even put some antisqueak or whatever you call it on to stop that. Is it just rust? I mean it's really loud, I wouldn't think that rust would make it that loud. It's been doing it since I bought the car back in '06. My friend has a Lumina, same year, that he keeps outside too and his has never done it. I've never had anything like it on either of my other cars.... Anyone have any ideas? The brakes are only probably 6 years old or so (40k miles...they were replaced about a year before I bought the car)
RobertISaar
don't suppose you can give a slightly more detailed description of the noise? kinda sounds like what intermittently happened with the MC when it still had it's factory drums, and possibly shoes as well, around 150K miles... got new drums, shoes, the hardware kit for the drums and MAYBE the wheel cylinders (cheap ones at that) and i don't think it ever happened again. urbex
Honestly, no... I don't know how else to describe it... It's just really loud and grinding...sounds kind of like metal on metal. Like I said, it's been doing it since the brakes were a year old, and there's plenty of life left in them so they aren't in need of replacing. I mean, I suppose replacing EVERYTHING would fix it, but I didn't know if there's one thing in particular worth looking at. Heck, and it's so loud, I can't even tell for sure which side it's on. I doubt it's really hurting anything, but I don't really know. I've only put 30k on the car since I bought it, so it might not have hurt it yet, but I really have no idea. RobertISaar
metal on metal grinding.... kinda sounds like the shoes are glazed over, or where they are applied in the drum is the issue... i hit my drums up with a wire wheel anytime i take the rear wheels off, and a quick sanding on the shoes using some ~80 grat sandpaper... you may want to try that if you feel it's worth investigating. urbex
Hmmm...you know, that would be worth a shot. I mean, looking at it, if that were the case I doubt I would notice that just from looking.... I'll have to check that out!
White93z34
you say its been sitting for a few days to make that happen? sounds like rust is just building up on the drums surface and that noise is the shoes grinding it off.
