Joe T. Squirrel
1995 Monte Carlo 3100 Hey all, First off - can anyone tell me if GM has a programmer in their midst that added code to the PCM to blow up *everything* at 100,000 miles? Doggone! Ah well, my CS-130D alternator (100A w/6 groove pulley) decided it would unload the voltage regulator. It's the original and hasn't been rebuilt. 10 years ago, I would have run down to NAPA or Autozone and bought the first rebuilt to fall to hand. Unfortunately, anyone I've ever known (including me) has had terrible luck with rebuilds from both places. Lifetime replacement, but replacing them every six months gets to be a pain (plus the added chance for electrical system damage due to overcharging / undercharging). My last car didn't even have a computer, so no worries. I read on the net that finding a good local rebuilder was the way to go, so I called a place today - $122 for him to rebuild the alt replacing "whatever needs to be replaced." "What if it just needs a new regulator and rectifier?" "$122." "What if it needs everything replaced?" "$122." "Warranty?" "Six months." "Hmmmmm, let me think on that." Great way to run a business - he either makes lots of money (replacing everything), or he makes *lots and lots* of money (replacing two things and leaving the rest alone). In either case, I say screw him and I'm thinking of rebuilding it myself. My question is - does anyone know of a website that has rebuild instructions for this model (or has rebuilt one themselves)? Anyone know of a reputable supplier for parts on the net? I might be able to find a local supplier, but wanted to know if anyone has had good luck with a dot-com. Finally, just for kicks, who would everyone recommend for a quality rebuilt or new alternator (keeping it under $1,000,000 please). Thanks, JTS
musthavemuzk
may i ask how big your stereo is? that is my first impression. not saying i am right or wrong though. the local shop here quotes 75-100 for a rebuild. not sure on warranty though. i have not done it personally as i want a HUGE alt. they will only rebuild to stock. they will do up to 140 which is stock on some GM vehicles in my same case. but i want 225+. there are many sources online that do semi big to HUGE alts for those into car audio. one of my friends just got a 300 amp alt for 450 from Dominick at irragi alts. oh this is for his 92 z-34 lumina. as for instructions i would think that either a chiltons or haynes manual would have instructions. Joe T. Squirrel
Hey all, Nope, my stereo system is practically stock - a 100-amper gets the job done. It's just tired after 100,000 miles I thought that most places would charge about $80 to rebuild the unit - he may have been giving me the "guy off the street" charge thinking I'd jump at it. Uh-uh. I appreciate the sites on parts and parts info. Thank you! Any other info is welcomed! JTS
