Bostons94Vert Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 My 94 Cutlass Vert has 135xxx miles on it and the last person to own the car didn't really do much maintenance ever...I've only put about 10,000 miles since Ive owned it in 2 years but I also replaced the plugs and wires along with routine oil changes...all the brakes were redone about 5000 miles ago...4 new rotors and all new pads...I also had to replace the trailing arms as they were rusted in two pieces...I need this car to last me another year so I want to know wat I can do to ensure that it makes it. Any Suggestions are greatly appreciated Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 Service the trans mission, fuild and filter, air filter, fuel filter, PCV valve, and maybe run some lucas through it.. Quote
Bostons94Vert Posted February 10, 2011 Author Report Posted February 10, 2011 I have flushed the cooling system, replaced the air filter by getting rid of the stock air box and just running a k&n filter and have put a quart of Lucas oil during last oil change...what about timing idk how these motors are set...is it a chain or a belt and should it be done? I drive about 100 miles a day during the week and the new England winters have not been nice to the cars underbody...is there any recommended suspension maintenance as well? I apologize for a million questions I just want to stay on top of things Quote
AL Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 the 3.1 is a timing chain and I have only seen 1 or 2 go bad in my life Quote
GOT2B GM Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 a vert with 135000 miles on the original struts is gonna need struts Quote
Bostons94Vert Posted February 13, 2011 Author Report Posted February 13, 2011 The suspension could definately use some tlc thats next on my list...I was just trying to keep the motor and trans in working order...the only problem I have really is the light knocking sound commin from the motor that honestly sounds like piston slap but I'm not sure if that would be the case...is this knocking a known issue and is there any fix? I appreciate the help Quote
dodgethis Posted February 13, 2011 Report Posted February 13, 2011 Are you talking about the piston tap when you start it? I have the 3100 and it always does it, perfectly normal. I had a 95 cutlass ciera with a 3100 In it and it did the same thing. Quote
