Chip
A few weeks back I replaced the middle section of the tranny cooler lines on my 96 Regal 3100 with transmission cooling line (3/8") and new fuel line clamps that were recommended on the sight. All was well for about 3 weeks, then started leaking again. The outlet line was leaking at the union between the line from the transmission side to the middle rubber piece. I pulled the splice piece out and found that the bubble flare on one end was broken off. I think when I changed the hoses, the bubble flare end broke off in the old hose. With no flare, the oil was leaking out a little between the now smooth fitting and hose. Is this part a factory only part? The parts store acted like I was speaking another langauge when I asked about a 3/8" OD, double flared, hose splice/hose connector/hose union. I guess GM might be the easiest option, just find it hard to believe this part is that unique.
Crazy K
yes. I have flared the tubing as needed in the past. On more than one car I have even removed the crimped connector and added a flare to both the transmission output lines and run new rubber hoses from the transmission to the cooler lines and then double clamped both ends with higher quality stainless hose clamps bought from Lowes or Home Depot. but you can go to the dealer and get the line, it should be cheap enough.... Chip
I was totally off base here in what I "thought" was the OEM setup. I got a schematic from my dealer today and see that there are only 4 pieces to the OEM setup. Two lines coming from the tranny that are metal crimped to rubber, and then the two all-metal lines to the radiator. The previous owner must have had someone repair the lines, and that is how this intermediate rubber hose got in the mix. That added more joints to the lines, and more places to leak. So anyway, it looks like the all metal sides were cut and shortened, requiring the rubber intermediate pieces. Long and short is that I have ordered the two metal lines, and I already have the new tranny side ones from NAPA and am going to replace everything and eliminate all those joints and splice pieces. I am concerned about the 5/8" threaded fittings that go into the tranny. They are quite corroded. Even with a flared open end wrench, I don't like the "feel" I get when I put some muscle to it. I don't want to round that fitting off. Should I just cut the metal line so I can get a 6 pt. socket on it?
