mfewtrail
I'm sure someone here could grab you a good stock cable from a junkyard for cheap. Post a "WTB"(want to buy) ad in the for sale section if interested.

BXX
punctuation. the hood latch cables are still readily available if i'm nolt mistaken Yeah, I believe they are under $50 from the dealer. I paid $35 for mine for my 89 GP, but that was about 4.5 years ago. Hmm, I need one for my CS now, i'll hit up GMPD to see what they run online. BXX
Yup, price on http://www.gmpartsdirect.com for my 95 CS is $46.30 Part Number is 10157873 For the Lumina, the price is $22.91 but the pic shows just the cable itself. Not sure on the actual release lever and its cost and PN.
94 olds vert
Yes, I have jury rigged my hood release so that it opens from the under the bumper. I just used some steel cable and connected it to the release mechanism. Then I used a pulley and brought it right under the pass. side fog light. I can just pull down on the cable and it pops open the hood. When i did this I had the front bumper and bumper cover off. It makes it a lot easier as their isn't much room. But I am sure its possible to do it without taking the bumper off.
