BXX
Its the wear indiciator. When the pad gets low, it will rub on the rotor making noise and telling you to install new brakes:thumbsup:
AL
Also known as the squeaker
MemphisMan
I had a friend who just wouldn't listen to me when I told him the squeal was his brake wear indicators and that he needed to change his pads. He thought his brakes just needed some WD-40...WTF lol. Yes, he didn't listen and ended up having to replace his rotors.

GnatGoSplat
GM thinks it's important that they be installed up! From the service manual: Important The wear sensor is on the outside pad. The sensor is positioned at the leading edge (upward) of the pad during forward wheel rotation. I don't know why it's so important, but it's actually under the heading "Important"! Can't really see why it matters myself.
virtuetovice
Probably because there are idiots out there that will won't know to change the pads until "why the fuck aren't my brakes working?? OH SH----"
