GM Guy
My 91 Z34 has had the pump whine for some time and has been getting worse and is now extremely bad at high rpm. There was a post I recall some years ago that it is actually caused by a blockage in the rack. Anyone with this ever try backflushing or is it hopeless? 94 olds vert
My pump has been whining for over 700 miles now. I also have to power assist when I steer. I've replaced the pump several times and the rack once. I have also tried flushing it out and no luck. Mine still whines. I want to try some Lucas power steering fluid additive. I thought that might help just never got around to it.
GM Guy
Replaced my pump too, twice, no improvement. Interesting the rack didn't help. Mine sounds like a B&M supercharger as the RPMs increase and gets so loud you can't hear the engine. Replaced the hoses too in the past due to leakage. 94 olds vert
Yup mine also sounds like a supercharger. I replaced my lines when I replaced the rack and pump. Do you have any power assist when you steer? My steering wheel is very hard to turn at low speeds.

I have 94k on it now. I'm almost to the point of trying to figure out how to mount a pulley in place of the pump and forget pwr steering. Have plenty of experience pushing it around while not running. Edited January 9, 2011 by GM Guy

GM Guy
A steering wheel delete pulley? Maybe I should keep it as most people that hear it think I have a blower anyway.

dodgethis
lol that's what I tell people. Are ya'll seeing the same issue with using a used pump, or is it the same even with a new one?
GM Guy
New ones each time and each was just as loud as the one it replaced.
94 olds vert
Yup my same problem exactly. I think I have put in three pumps now and all have whinned.
oldscsc
Try a power steering pressure test. If the pressure is too low, you need a new pump. If the pressure is too high, you have a restriction somewhere in the system.
Red Nightmare
Maybe it is just a poor design on the W Mine does this whine too even after a couple fluid changes. The temperature seems to matter little but it seems to quiet a bit when the car is fully warmed.
Galaxie500XL
My '95 does the same thing, worse in the winter, especially when temps are below freezing. I've got good assist at all speeds, and it's done it the past two winters. I'm looking for a replacement NV7 pump (mine has the "variable assist" pump), just in case, but they're hard to find. The dealer stopped selling them years ago.
carkhz316
So on my '92, it whines like a normal vehicle's pump that is shot. Is this the degree of whining you are all describing? Because if so, I won't even bother with mine.
94 olds vert
No mine screams at me. I really don't care anymore. I have no power assist. It's been just about 1000 miles on this pump and I still drive it. This summer if I care enough to get power steering I might try another pump.
