Chip
while repairing leaking trans lines today, i noticed my oil coated oil pan is getting worse. No dripping on the ground in the driveway, just rustproofing the trans pan constantly. How involved is a pan gasket change? Looks like a bunch of shit in the way. Any tips for this job (other than don't do it) or things I should be prepared for? Thanks
virtuetovice
A fuck-ton of bolts, patience and spare time.
Bake82
Pretty much you need to either drop the subframe or at the very least you got to lift the engine up a few inches to be able to get off the mounting bracket for the main engine mount and everything else that needs to come out. IF you drop the subframe, replace all subframe bushings AND ALL BOLTS.
BXX
You have to drop the subframe or raise the engine more than just a few inches! No matter what, its a pain in the ass to weasel it out. How much oil you loosing due to it between oil changes?? Ive never seen one that doesnt leak. If your not going through more than a quart of oil in 3000-4000 miles I would leave it alone. Highmilagecutlass
I agree with every one else here..I dropped my oil to put in a new oil pump and replace the oil .. I had to support the engine and transmission to drop the cradle. Maybe some high mileage engine oil could expand ( swell ) those leaking gaskets ? AL
Have you tried just tightening the bolts some more?
Chip
Have you tried just tightening the bolts some more? Yes. They seem tight. I don't lose an appreciable amount of oil. Maybe 1/2 qt over the duration of a 3000 mile interval, and yes, it has high mileage oil ( because it is a good, strong, semi-synth that my motor gets good oil analysis results from), but it has not caused a change in oil seepage from the gasket. Sounds like just better off to look the other way....
