MonteCarloChick
I just had my steering rack replaced earlier this week. When I turn, the steering feels almost like it's getting tethered by a rubber band then breaks free for a second on light, normal turns while in motion. Any idea what this could be? Thanks
94 olds vert
Is making any unexpected noises when it does this?
MonteCarloChick
It clicks/pops
94 olds vert
Cool mine does the same thing. I've put over 600 miles on it now and I have yet to figure out why.
MonteCarloChick
It's seriously annoying. I can't turn normally.. I have to turn the wheel extraly (yeah, it's not a word.. deal with it.), or I'll drive off my intended course because the steering sticks. virtuetovice
I wonder if there's some flaw with the racks you guys have?

Crazy K
get help from a friend... look at the base (the bearing plate) that each of the front springs ride on while your friend turns the wheel (engine on, wheel through full range of motion) and see if the base and therefore the bottom of either of the springs tried to turn with the wheel. They should not be turning or trying to turn as they ride on a bearing... p.s. what was wrong with the old rack?
MonteCarloChick
The seals exploded the other day. It was leaking for a long time prior to that. Thanks Ken
GOT2B GM
Do you find you have an increased turning radius with your new rack?
BXX
First thing first. After replacing the rack, were the outer tie rods replaced? and was the car aligned after the install of the new rack? and since the subframe was dropped to replace the rack, were new subframe bushings installed and/or the subframe bolts torqued to spec, IIRC 135ftlb and was the rack bolts secured tight, they are around 100ftlb and MUST be tight or the rack with move and make knocking, popping, and clicking noises
GOT2B GM
also I would check the pinch bolt where the intermediate shaft meets the stub shaft on the rack.
MonteCarloChick
My outer tie rods were bent initially so they replaced them while doing the rack and yes it was aligned. I'm going back over to where I had it done on Monday with my list of problems so they can fix it. Thanks everyone

MonteCarloChick
The clicking/sticking turned out to be caused by a broken cv shaft boot. Just a coincidence after the rack replacement.
