Galaxie500XL
Well, it's winter again, and once more, the growling from my power steering pump is VERY loud. I've asked before about the noise, but wonder about a fix... I'm aware that the '95 LQ1 Cutlasses got the pump, and it appears that both the pump and the variable orfice are not available any longer from GM... Is the pump itself special, or is it just the variable orfice that makes it special... In other words, can I use a standard 3.4 power steering pump, and just swap the actuator off of my existing pump onto the new one? Or, do I need to find another NV7 pump? Thanks! 94 olds vert
I have put three new Power steering pumps in my car and they all whined. I currently have over 560 miles on my third one now and it still whines. Do you still have power assist when turning? Especially at low speeds is it hard to turn? Galaxie500XL
Sometimes, when the temperatures are below 30, I don't have assist for the first second or so after startup when the wheel is first moved...but after that, it seems OK. To be perfectly honest, if I hadn't read it is supposed to be variable assist, I'd have never realized it...feels about the same to me, no matter what. 94 olds vert
Mine is hard to steer all the time. But on the snow today it was really nice and easy. lol
Galaxie500XL
Mine's pretty easy to steer, but I'm probably comparing it to the LeBaron convertible I had before. It had very heavy steering, almost as heavy as that old '64 Ford I used to drive. My Cutlass is about halfway between the effort the LeBaron had, and the steering effort of our HHR. 94 olds vert
I had a 65 corvair and this cutlass is much harder to steer than that. There is something for sure wrong with mine.
Galaxie500XL
I'd say if 3 different power steering pumps didn't change things, you likely have a dying steering rack...

Galaxie500XL
So, no one knows if the NV7 power steering pump is different than the standard pump?
AL
They are different... You can't use a standard pump on an NV7 car due to the way the lines connect... I tried it once... My Monte Carlos pump was standard and I tried hooking it up to my friends cutty which was NV7 and the lines wouldn't connect to the pump
AL
I just realized you had the 3.4... I was referring to the 3.1... I am not sure about the 3.4 pumps
