my transmission issues

It seems as if when i come to a complete or partial stop that my car will slip sometimes. it keeps happening more frequently. once i backed out of my driveway and put the car in drive and the car died. If i stop at a light and then go when it turns green, sometimes the rpms will just go up and then a second later the trans will engage. Anyone have any ideas, the fluid level looks good and the car has 65K.

TransX fixes this every time I've encountered it. Valve body is probably gummed up with varnish and crap. Try putting the car in 3, 2, 1 and see if it still does it; usually it will work normally in these gears. When you're reving the motor, the transmission pump builds up pressure and then engages.

Get some TransX, drive for 500 miles and then do a pan drop and filter change. Chances are I bet the symptoms improve within 100 miles of driving. TransX is as thin as water, don't use lucas which is thick like molasas.

I do not often endorse mechanic in a bottle type fluids, however I've seen this stuff save five transmissions for the remaining life of the car when a transmission shop insists a full rebuilt is necessary.

Okay well i took it to a guy that we know who is a mechanic and hes not even sure that it is the transmission. He says it could be a resistor or something. He said also that the throttle body could be dirty or something. I dont know all the details because my dad took it it today because i had school. i do however need a ball joint because one of them is shot. also the mechanic did a diagnostic on it and got the code for the Knock sensor. I dont know if the symptom for when i back out and then go into drive the car completely shuts off could point to anything specific, if anyone has any ideas at all, please post, i wont criticize. oh and by the way i changed the fluid with no success to fix the problem, but thanks for the suggestion.

"resistor or something"? LOLwat?

and a knock sensor code will generally cause the motor to run at severely retarded timing, killing power, fuel economy and driveability all at once, which could cause your stalling issue.

I have had this problem in a number of my gm vehicles, all had high miles though. Although i was never able to quite put my finger on it, i was told that the bands in the tranny were stretched. to me that sounds like an old wise tale. i am guessin the clutch pack may be worn.

that would make sence because when i come to a stop, and it is not engaged, it will act JUST like it is in neutral, i will roll forward or backward depending on the slope. but then when it engages it shifts fine into second and third and so on.

i just found out that when i come to a stop, and the transmission does not engage, if i shift into park or neutral and back into drive then it engages, otherwise it takes like 10-15 seconds to do it by itself. any ideas?

Is this when its cold or all the time? A filter and new fluid sounds like a good start. I would also take Hairdo's advice and throw some of that trans stuff in there for a while before you do the filter and fluid change.

Sounds like low line pressure...bet your filter is gummed up, or, it's allowing air to be sucked up, because the filter isn't sealed against the opening any more.

Fluid and filter change, definitely....have also seen vacuum modulators stick, and cause weird issues....they're cheap enough (under $15.00) to make it worthwhile to replace.

The big thing, though, is to STOP DRIVING THE CAR until you figure out what the issue is...because if it isn't permanently damaged now, it will be if you keep driving it while it's misbehaving....

i have never had this particular problem but if i can take a guess the clutch pack inside your trans may be severely worn. i would have the trans looked at by a certified shop to confirm this. hope this helps you...........speedy96z

Thanks everybody, i did all i could with the tools that i have in the garage, but everything that we did resulted in no change. In the end i had to bite the bullet and bring it it and has to have it rebuilt, the clutch pack was worn down and to torque converter was shot, however, everything runs smooth now.
