Any differences between a 284 and 282 shifter

Is there any difference between a 282 and 284 shifter. I found a shifter in a 88-89 gp and thought it might work but wasn't sure if the cable links were different.

I think they are different because the 284 shifter is a square style and the 282 is round, I think that is what I remember reading

GP is round, CS and Z34 is flat, 282 or 284

I put a round 282 shifter in my 284 equipped Z34

 

I had to grind the pin for the shift cable off and weld the 284 pin from my z34 flat shifter on.

 

The select cable hooked up fine.

Ah I see, Wonder why they did that? Does it feel any different when shifting? I havent driven a 5 speed cutty or a lumi 5 speed

No not really, I custom shortened my gp shifter, but did it because it allows the use of pretty much any shift knob.

Are the GP and Lumina shifters interchangeable

Matt, where did you get that knob (and boot)? That's exactly the knob I've always wanted if I ever got a 5 speed car. Well... I might want one now

Got it from a guy on Pennocks Fiero Forum that recovers GM stock knobs with your choice of leather / stitching

boot is stock, just rolled the neck down inside itself to account for the shortened shifter (I cut it and rewelded it at the base)

I pretty much know what I want, but I'm not in a hurry just yet. I'd like to find another one first and get two done just to have a spare though. Let me know when you're ready, cuz Im ready whenever. I know he said he was taking a break soon to move, so I don't know if that's something you were keeping in mind.
