Psych0matt Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 So, I have a lugnut (factory lock kind that needs a key) that someone tried to pound a socket on to get off, thereby completely destroying it. Get it off how to I need knowing to do it. Many thanks to be. Quote
ManicMechanic Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Either pound a 12 point socket on it and take off.....Or get the tool made for taking those nuts off......Or get the car running and take it to a tire shop. Quote
mra32 Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 or take all the other ones off and try to break the stud off by pulling on the wheel. BRUTE FORCE! Quote
BXX Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 I use my air hammer, but thats not something most people are good with without trashing the rim:lol: Your gonna have to do what Jay said. If all else fails, get it to a tire shop and pay them like 1/2hr or less to get them off. Be ready to have the rim damaged. Quote
Psych0matt Posted November 16, 2010 Author Report Posted November 16, 2010 Or get the tool made for taking those nuts off...... One is already trashed and I cant get it off even with the tool. If I can get this one off I can at least get to the alt to work on it, the other I can wait for the proper tool. Quote
tornado_735 Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Get an impact socket, and pound that bitch on there. Quote
Psych0matt Posted November 16, 2010 Author Report Posted November 16, 2010 good excuse for me to buy an impact set. And an air compressor (I might not be joking!) Quote
Jonpro03 Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 I would take it in for a tire rotation. Quote
ManicMechanic Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Get an impact socket, and pound that bitch on there. And use a 12 point or even an 8 point. A 6 point will round it off even worse. Try an 11/16, 3/4 or 13/16. Quote
Psych0matt Posted November 16, 2010 Author Report Posted November 16, 2010 is cutting it off from the back (with a dremel or the like?) an option? I dont mind ruining the stud or even the hub Quote
GP1138 Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Holy shit!! Yeah.. I'd pull on the wheel a bunch. Quote
Addicted to eaton Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Drill out the inside of the lug and then go a little bigger drill it out more till, its not there. Quote
Psych0matt Posted November 16, 2010 Author Report Posted November 16, 2010 that's one plan I've been thinking. Otherwise, jack it up and place on jack stands, crank on the wheel and try to break the stud Quote
Addicted to eaton Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Get 2 come-alongs. chain the car down with one. and then put another one on the wheel... and go till it comes off! Quote
mra32 Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Studs are easy to break. Especially old rusted ones. BRUTE FORCE! Quote
Psych0matt Posted November 16, 2010 Author Report Posted November 16, 2010 well im drilling in as far as i can but pretty sure tthe bit is dull now i dont know how much brute force i have! Quote
GOT2B GM Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 buy a 1/2" cobalt drill bit, they are expensive but work great. Quote
Psych0matt Posted November 16, 2010 Author Report Posted November 16, 2010 any auto parts or hardware store? I'm using a 3/8 right now but it's pretty dull. I used a 1/8(i think) after i got started, and the a unibit a little, but a sharp bigger one would be perfect Quote
mra32 Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 drop the car down with the steering wheel turned all the way to the side with the borked lugnut. Make sure the lugnut is oriented toward the back of the car. Start steering to the other side. Or maybe have it up in the air still with the wheels oriented the same as above and put a properly sized piece of something (wood, breaker bar, full 2 liter bottle of soda) to keep the front of the wheel out of the wheel well and steer the other way Quote
mra32 Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Or flip flop the orientation of the broken lugnut and the way the steering wheel is turned, since the tie rods are on the rear of the knuckles (i think) Quote
Psych0matt Posted November 16, 2010 Author Report Posted November 16, 2010 Good call mike, gonna do that right now. was gonna grab another bit but im not heading out for a while Quote
xtremerevolution Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Good call mike, gonna do that right now. was gonna grab another bit but im not heading out for a while I take it you were using oil to drill through the stud? Quote
Skunkworks_Zed Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 I take it you were using oil to drill through the stud? x2. Get some cutting oil, sharpen your drill bits, and have at 'er. Trying to break/tear the wheel off, is probably just going to destroy everything else in that area instead of that nut/stud Quote
