SES Light

Alright, the past 2 days on my way home from work my SES (Service Engine Soon) light has come on. It doesn't do it in the morning on the way to work, it only does it on the way home. When the light comes on I'm on the highway, doing highway speeds (60 mph+). After being at this speed for about 5 minutes, the light comes on. About 5 minutes later (still doing highway speed), the light will then shut itself off. Yesterday it came on, shut itself off, came on, and shut itself off again on my way home.

I know, I know, go pull the code. Well OBD1.5 sucks and I don't have the time to go to PepBoys after work to get it scanned, and I can't afford a scantool or ALDL cable right now. So does anyone have any guess what it may be?

One last thing to mention, my torque converter is cranky and sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, not sure how that would affect my engine light as it doesn't seem to make a difference as to when it comes on or shuts off.

I almost guarentee its the EGR. Right around there on the highway is where the EGR diagnostics will run.

Prolly carbon buildup like crazy.

Search youtube for EGR Flow insufficient and there are a few videos on there showing how to clean out the 3100 EGR paths.

However the only sure way to know anything is to get a code pulled.

Or like me, when the same thing happened to me, the next day I OBD2 swapped da biatch:lol:

No, I've delt with the EGR before. Do not educate me on my arch nemesis  I'm the one who wrote the FAQ on fixing it. It isn't behaving the way it did the last time it was EGR. When the tube for the EGR was clogged it would come on at 45 mph or higher (it isn't coming on until highway speed for a few minutes, it used to come on everytime it hit 45 mph) around where overdrive would kick in. It isn't doing that. It would also come on EVERY time I was on the highway, not only sometimes like it is doing now. Plus, its only been a few weeks since it was seafoamed.

Ya know it's not like I wrote this or anything: http://www.w-body.com/showthread.php/47108-Check-Engine-Light-Trouble-Code-for-EGR-Help-inside!

So IF it is the EGR, it isn't behaving at all like it was the last time it was the EGR.

Well only a few things run the diagnostics at highway speed.

EGR and EVAP..

Get us a code homie:thumbsup:

Well, that reminds me. The light was off for months (it hadn't come on since I had fixed the EGR). The first time it came on was on the way home from Chris and Shaun's house the Sunday after the Pittsburgh meet, where my spark plugs and wires replaced, and it was seafoamed. Came on for a few minutes, a few minutes later it shut off and remained off. Being that it didn't come back, I just kinda ignored it, figured it probably had something to do with the seafoam burning off or something. The light didn't come on again until last week. And now it is doing it almost daily.

I had the actual EGR valve go bad and that would only set a code every now and then.

I should have a spare EGR valve from a Series 1 3800 if its listed as the same part number.
