Dark Ride
I have three questions: 1. Is there any risk of running only a transmission cooler and not running it with the cooler built-in to the radiator? 2. The tranny cooler I have that I intend to use is almost as long as the radiator core (not including the endtanks) but is only about an inch wide and an inch tall. I am considering mounting it directly below the radiator support, or using longer bolts to mount it about an inch or so below the radiator support. This is on my TGP and I'm wondering if it will get enough airflow there. 3. Does anyone have a picture of what their TGP/ 89-93 GP radiator support looks like with all the air shrouds and stuff in place? That would help with my airflow/mounting decision, and it's been so long since my TGP was all together that I've forgotten what else mounts there. Thanks, Mitch
Crazy K
Did this come from a taurus? I think you could extract a good used cooler from any 91-93 Z34 and some 91-93 3800 cars that would be a direct bolt on (fan clearance permitting) I would not mount it under the radiator support. it will be too susceptible to damage. <--- why mustangs SUCK. You can completely bypass the radiator cooler if you must, though you will loose one distinct point of having it in the radiator, which is temperature moderation from the temperature of the coolant. It is usually suggested to run both coolers in series, such that both coolers are used, and it is debatable if the aux cooler should be before or after the radiator cooler. virtuetovice
I was thinking about doing a trans cooler on my Cutty. Now I have shopping to do
Night Fury
I did aftermarket only on my 04 thinking I wasn't going to drive it in winter.... so I'm going to have to plug it or something this winter cause it will prolly stay too cold. Galaxie500XL
I put a trans cooler from a 3.8 Regal into my '95 Cutlass LQ1 convertible. The holes were already at the top radiator support for the brackets.. However, since the Cutlass doesn't actually have a grill, it takes a bit of effort putting it in the factory location, but so far has been worth it. There should be a thread on here that I wrote about this time last year describing the work--that failing, I'll help you any way I can. One nice side benefit of the junkyard route, the total cost was less than $40.00, and the result is absolutely invisible.

Dark Ride
Well, the cooler was free to me. I'm thinking now of maybe mounting it behind the radiator, maybe modifying the fan mounts a little, that way if the fans kick on they will cool the tranny cooler as well. What is the ideal temperature for a transmission?

Night Fury
I was in the 260 range in my 2005 GP GTP last summer going to California.... No good.
Dark Ride
what are the consequences of it running cooler than that, I'm slightly concerned that the cooler I have may be a little too big and if I run it solo without the radiator cooler that it might get too cool. I only plan on running this car during the summer. Is this a valid concern, or does the 4T65-e produce enough heat that overcooling wouldn't be a problem? I'm thinking that if I can figure out a way to mount it behind the radiator, right behind the fans that it would be optimum.
Night Fury
They are as hot as menopausal witches. Only downsides to running too cool is seals and shit might loose some flexibility, and the TCC not locking up. Not sure what the threshold is for the TCC though
