Mach 5 Posted October 26, 2010 Report Share Posted October 26, 2010 (edited) ok now I was driving home from work I was getting on the highway smashing the gas as usual nothing out of the ordinary and mis shifted 3rd into 5th but I went to go into 3rd and it wouldn't go in. So I started trying other gears only to find that I was locked out of everything except 5th. I probably killed the clutch driving the car home in 5th which was a nightmare. I want to repair this trans using my parts trans I was just curious if anyone has if encountered this problem and would know where to look. It didn't grind or anything it just wont go into any other gear. I have another Getrag 284 but its all apart so before I put it back in the car I want to install an LSD unit but the site that I got doesn't have them listed for it I believe it was drivetrain.com or something like that I forget. They seem to only have it listed for the Getrag 282 not the 284. If anyone has any idea on where to go that would be great. Mach 5 Posted October 26, 2010 Author Report Share Posted October 26, 2010 nope no reverse. just 5th. I can move it in and out of 5th and move it left and right in neutral but thats it. Mach 5 Posted October 26, 2010 Author Report Share Posted October 26, 2010 with both cables off I can move the shifter just fine doesn't feel like its binding in any way both cables move freely. I can only put it into 5th gear moving the linkages on the trans it wont go into any other gear. I wonder in something came loose or broke internally somethings definitely wrong here. ss427 Posted October 27, 2010 Report Share Posted October 27, 2010 EXACT thing happened to me three weeks ago in Manhattan. Really freaked me out. I didn't miss a gear but shifted into 5 at pretty low speed which I think may have caused it.. really don't know. I rolled off to the side and shut the car off. Thought it was the cable at first and had my GF try and move the lever around while I watched the selector mech which was limiting it to neutral gate and 5 only. I think what I did was got in the car still turned off and hit the clutch to let the car start rolling backwards a little bit while trying to jam it into reverse or any other gear. After about 10 seconds of screwing with it popped out of 5th and I haven't had the problem since. I think it has something to do with the reverse detent that engages when you go into 5th and prevents you from downshifting into reverse on your way to 4. My tranny has 172000 on it. Mach 5 Posted October 27, 2010 Author Report Share Posted October 27, 2010 wow thats crazy!! not in a good way but still basically the same exact problem ok well the trans is coming out and another one which I had trouble w/ because of my extension housing bearing which failed is going back in. I have another housing for it and I ordered an LSD from drivetrain.com. They said it should be about 3weeks before I see it. They claim its rated for 450 although they say the peak is in the mid to high 500 range so it should be just fine Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The guy Shep who I talked to had to contact the manufacturer of the unit to make sure they could do it so Im sure it will be fine but yeah I hope they dont send me a 282 unit that would suck. Garrett Powered Posted October 29, 2010 Report Share Posted October 29, 2010 better than 1 tire fire no doubt. with that much power it probably won't last long anyway. hell, it won't last long if you try doing burnouts even WITHOUT that much power. my stage 3 spec clutch was so harsh it blew the spider gear right out the case, completely shattering it. feels like the stage 2 on it now would probably do the same before long. mine is cheap compared to those, I wish I had known about that kind, sounds like they have one for the 282 and although the picture sucks and you cant really see the thing, I am guessing that it would last longer/ better engineered than the phantom grip lsd. mine had metal filings in the oil right away but it does not have any brass bushings. grips like hell though. it would have to be put to the test, which I believe you will do a fine job of that. change the oil right away after first test drive and take a bunch of pictures of the part before it goes in if you can. and with it installed in the diff too. oh, and did they ask for the diff to be sent over to have it factory installed? if so, I would recommend having them install it and send it back to you. otherwise I hope you don't have to grind down anything to get it to fit like with the PG extreme unit. luckily my trans guy figured it out after awhile, but it was a bitch communicating with them trying to figure it all out, I would have rather just had them do it. or you may get it and it just goes right in without any issues, it's hard to tell if they don't have YOUR diff. kuntzie Posted October 30, 2010 Report Share Posted October 30, 2010 my trans is stock, the one i had in my car cracked the case but it still drives fine, i hit a pot hole while oing a burnout and i DO NOT have a braket holding the intermediate shaft, so it cracked because of that stress. my car will spin both front wheels even without LSD, i was using a spec stage 5 and it was junk, going triple disc tilton next year (already made) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
