Drummer
this is on my 39 GP 3.4 getrag 284. there is a vibration only when accelerating, it's couldn't be a wheel cause it doesn't do it coasting. It's more noticeable in 2nd and 3rd gear. not sure if an axle could do this or if something is screwed up in my transmission. I'm kinda stumped:dunno:. Any thoughts? BXX
Could be an axle, loose engine or trans mount. Even loose front end parts can cause vibrations under accel. Sure its not like a slight misfire??
AL
Most likely a misfire... Best way to tell if its a misfire is to shift into 5th going about 30 or 35 mph and floor the gas pedal... If it shakes depending on throttle percentage then its a misfire... Happened to me on the 91... Was a coilpack going out
Drummer
my vibration is like a side to side vibration(left to right). I'm pretty sure it's not a misfire because I've had that happen to me before and it turned out to be wires, and i replaced the plugs also with the wires. The acceleration is smooth except for the side to side vibration.
94GPGTP
Holy cow.. I have the same issue!! I actually just finished my axle rebuild about an hour ago. Once I get home I'll know for sure if the axle was the problem or not. I have the same issue with my Tgp which has the 282 behind it. Upon acceleration in just about every gear it's harsher in lower gears I have a side to side wobble. "death wobble" I consider it. It's very violent. Upon dissassembly of the axle I did notice some extra movement in the outer cv so I changed it out with another.

Does it go away if you push the clutch in? mine does.. So that there tells me either clutch or transmission.. Have you grinded, missed, poped outta gear at all before it started? Have you grinded, missed, poped outta gear at all before it started? only 5th gear sometimes but thats the syncro. never popped out of gear. and its only when im on the gas. could a broken spring on the clutch or a broken belt in the tire do that? 94GPGTP
Its your CV axles CHECK THEM or REPLACE THEM!! i just changed my trans and still no luck! upon further investigation i found the driver side to be bad.. Internally it failed and all the needle bearings fell out and caused slop in the joint which cause the shimmy.. YOUR very lucky that the 284 uses 2 driver side automatic axles from a 4t60e trans outta a grand prix.. Im not so lucky i have to build my axles because the 282 manual axles are shorter and longer than auto ones.. So find some good used auto axles and pop them in and see what you come up with.. I will know tomorrow morning after i rebuild my axle and put it in..
Drummer
yeah thats what I was thinking because I've noticed that it's the passenger side thats causing the vibrations when accelerating
Drummer
would a axle from a 3.4 euro work? I forget what motors got the 4t60E this euro is a 92 i believe, I also have the axles from automatic that was in my 93 grand prix when i first got it. AL
Yes if its a 93 it will have the 60e and that axle will work

Drummer
sweeeet!!!!! replaced the passengers side axle and apparently the old axle was missing a piece on the outside for the abs and now it works and there is no more vibration. Thanks for the help.
