Steering rack problems- steering off 180 degrees

I replaced the steering rack from my 94 with one from a 95 and the steering wheel is off 180 deg. Why did this happen and how can I fix it? If I just remove the steering wheel and rotate it 180 then the turn signals won't cancel. Does this mean I have to tear it all down to the canceling cam in order to get everything back the way it was?

You put the steering intermediate shaft onto the rack stub 180 off.

You need to unbolt the intermediate shaft from the rack. Center the rack, then center the steering wheel very very carefully as not to damage the airbag clock spring, then bolt them back together. Then go have the car aligned to keep from wearing out your tires.

Is the intermediate shaft the one that splits apart? If so, I didn't remove the piece from the steering column. I just let it split apart when I lowered the subframe. The piece I left on the old rack (the u-joint with the pinch bolt at the rack) was 180 deg. different on the new rack. Do I need to get the upper piece from the 95 that connects to the steering column in order to do this?

What????

You let the intermediate shaft split in two peices?? If so, you need a new I-shaft. They should never be seperated. You should unbolt the rack from the I-shaft at the pinch bolt right at the rack.

Head to the yard, get a complete I-shaft unit out and replace the entire I-shaft from the column to the rack.

and if you dont wanna do that method, then youll need to get the other piece of the I-shaft from a 94 to match the other half on the 94 column.

Can I get the upper part of the intermediate shaft from the 95 and put that in? How do you get the upper part of the intermediate shaft off? Why are you not supposed to let it split?

No your not supposed to let them seperate. They are two peice so they collapse a bit in a bad accident so the wheel doesnt go shooting through your head:lol:

Im sure its easier to replace the lower part of the I-shaft.

The reason I didn't reuse the 94 shaft was it was all rusted and worn. The protective boot was removed before I got the car. The 95 shaft looked like brand new and I also got the boot to put on it as well. Tomorrow I guess I will be tearing it back apart. I hope you are at least getting a good laugh out of this. I wish I could get the upper shaft from the 95 and put that on or get a good lower shaft from a 94. I really appreciate all the help.

Sorry, but I am getting a good laugh as I dont see why you didnt remove the pinch bolt and not mess with seperating the I-shaft.

I dont see how the 94 and 95 I-shaft ends are different? Sounds like the joint right to the rack where the pinch bolt is is whats off 180. Just un-180 it.

If you look at the pic that is the 94. If you flip it over so that the bolt hole is on the bottom instead of on the top like in the pic that would be the 95. You can just flip the 95 one cause the rack shaft has a grove for the bolt to fit into.

Ended up getting the upper half from the 95 and installed that. With that installed it solved the 180 deg wheel problem and the problem I was having with play in the steering wheel. My assumption is either the u-joints or the fiber joint(don't know what this is called) was bad.
