npfd
The usual deal, 97 Cutlass Supreme 3.1, with 211k km's on it. Recently I've noticed that when breaking hard, and then getting on the throttle again, the car stalled. (I think it did from what I remember), it happens quick. The car did have between 1/2 and 1/4 left of fuel in the tank. But when It stalled, it took a couple of key on before starting up again. But after that its been fine. Just yesterday this happened, in which driving on the highway needed to stop quickly, and the throttle wasn't responding, but the car was still idling, after a while it started to work again. Similar amount of fuel. We got the gas tank and pump changed at the garage last year due to corrosion. We changed the fuel filter ourselves two years ago, and around 35k km's ago. We noticed that sometimes their is slow throttle response, as stepping on the gas, and it takes a couple of seconds for the rpms to kick up, as there is a delay somewhere. Does anyone have any ideas what could be up.. I hope its not the pump.... Another problem we have, seperate from this, is a low squealing noise on startup, it goes away after a few minutes, diminishes... I tried to hear it, it seems to be coming from the front pulleys, either PS or water pump.... but last year we removed the a/c pipes, as the freon leaked out years before. I was wondering could the ac compressor make this noise too? edited - for additions Thanks. Edited October 20, 2010 by npfd
Galaxie500XL
I'd be suspicious of the throttle position sensor, your description of a "delay" when opening the throttle is a common symptom--sort of a "rubber band" effect. npfd
thanks, can we try cleaning the TPS and see what happens? Would the TPS cause stalling too or? To test fuel pressure we just hook up a pressure gauge with a rubber pipe to the valve?
WhatTheFehl
You can try cleaning the TPS if you want, but honestly they are not expensive and to me it would be worth the peace of mind to just buy a new one. What RPM is your car idling at? Is your car throwing any sort of SES light? I know on the OBD1.5 there was a code for "TPS Low Voltage" which told me that it had failed. I know nothing of OBDII, but I'm sure it must have some sort of similar code
npfd
Hmm well I don't know if its worth to change it, since we're not sure its that.... it be good though but we're up in Canada, dunno if its more expensive here.. RPM well now its around 5 degrees C, outside, so idles a bit more maybe 800rpm now... usually I think its 700rpm.... Edit - We noticed on start up, that sometimes the idle fluctuates around 100-200 rpm... sometimes more, and just pressing on the gas pedal makes it run better... thought I do notice vibration of the car at idle.. on and off.. So far no SES lights.. Thanks... Nice GP btw! Wish our CS was coupe but its a sedan ha! Edited October 23, 2010 by npfd
