Dogbone replacement or just bushing, and motor mount question

Chip

Recommended Posts

My 96 Regal Custom has 193K and original mounts. There is a clunk developing from Park to Reverse and Park to Drive, especially when cold, and I am pretty sure that all the mounts are probably equally worn.

I have read alot of different accounts on what lower mount to install. From a reliability standpoint, is the hydraulic or solid better?

Also, has anyone replaced just the dogbone bushings? I realize that the dogbone assembly is not that expensive compared to the bushing only. I have a press though, and wondered if anyone has swapped them and how difficult of a time they had.

Any brands to stay away from. RockAuto has Anchor brand, and they are about 10% less than what NAPA shows online.

Thanks

Solid is more reliable, but is supposed to transmit engine vibrations to the body more. I don't know what they're like in real life, but I do remember some people saying they couldn't tell a difference. I just replace my mount this past weekend and I used a hydraulic only because the previous lasted 12yrs and I figure that's good enough. I wish I'd gone for the solid rubber though, I don't think it would have made that much difference after seeing how tore up my old mount was.

I can't help with replacing just the dogbone bushings. I wouldn't even know where to buy just the bushings, unless you're talking about poly bushings which you also need to drill out the dogbones for them to fit.

I read someone had a very bad experience with an Anchor product recently and dont remember what thread it was

That guy's thread that I mentioned:

I bought an Anchor hydraulic from O'Reillys and it dropped right in. It wasn't painted black, nor did it have a Made In India sticker. The motor mount I got 11yrs ago DID have a Made In India sticker and the whole thing, rubber and all, was painted black. I don't remember if it was an Anchor or not. Seems like they source them from different factories.

It might be worth it for you to check out energy suspension poly bushings. I'm sure they would have some universals that would fit. I have a FFP poly dogbone and the engine noise wasn't to much over factory rubber.
