Manual Transmission Fluid

Addicted To Boost

Recommended Posts

I need to buy some MTF for my Getrag 282... I've done some reading on the net and found that there are (or were) 2 different versions of GM Synchromesh... just regular Synchromesh and also a friction modified version of it as well. Part number for the Friction Modified stuff is: 12377916

Can anyone verify the friction modified fluid is still out there? Anyone here have any personal experience with the fluid or recommendations?

Thanks in advance

There 23 bucks a bottle from gm... The 91 when I had it leaked fluid from the axle seals so I had to keep adding synchromesh and they are 7 dollars a quart at any parts store but its penzoil which I read is an equivalent to the gm stuff... Buck hasn't had any trouble with the trans as far as I know

SF grade 5W-30 was also recommended though....

Is that just motor oil? I only ask because I'm not really sure if mine is leaking... (probably is) because I checked the level today and there wasn't any oil on the dipstick

Al, which one is $23/bottle? I've read that the regular GM Synchromesh is only like $8 a bottle, not sure how much the friction modified version is...

If you can find gm synchromesh for 8 bucks a bottle that's impressive... I talked to them directly at the dealer and they told me 23... I found the pennzoil at advance auto for 7 bucks a bottle... I haven't heard about the friction modified version honestly

5W-30, yeah it's motor oil, just an old spec, SF, compared to the SM we use today.

not sure if it is a good idea or not, but alldata suggests it for a 282..... maybe as a last resort?

On GMPD, the FM stuff is $8/bottle and the regular Synchromesh is $10/bottle.... shipping is outrageous though. I wasn't able to find any Pennzoil Synchromesh locally at O'reilly's or Napa. :(

Doesn't the GM synchromesh have an additive in it that the Penzoil stuff doesn't? I believe its a semi- synthetic and penzoil is based off of the GM synchromesh but isn't the same. If the factory designed it for that trans then I would stick that in. I got my for $13 a quart its about $17 everywhere else Ive seen as high as $19 but I also worked at a dealer.

I've been running penz synchromesh from az. After my rebuild I'm thinking about running gm brand just to be on the safe side. I mean it's not likeyou have to refill or change it often + any dealer should stock it.
