gmrulz4u Posted October 3, 2003 Report Posted October 3, 2003 My mechanic has always put in 5 Litres of Mobil 1 Synthetic every time I've had an oil change done. I recently found that my Owners Manual states: 4 qt (US) Note: Additional oil may be required to bring oil level to full mark when changing oil filter. If 5 Litres = 5.2835 US qt's, does this mean my mechanic has been putting TOO much oil in my 2.8L engine? Or is it really no big deal, and nothing to worry about? I assume it's impossible to predict just what exactly is meant when GM says "Additional oil...", I mean how much is considered too much? Is 1.3 quarts too much? How much do you 2.8-3.1 guys put in when you change your oil? THANKS! Quote
Redfox340 Posted October 3, 2003 Report Posted October 3, 2003 If using the shorty filter @ 4.25 quarts - right on with the dipstick If using the bigger compadable filter @ 4.75 quarts - right on with the dipstick. Who told you to put 5 quarts in? Surprized it hasn't blow-backed or foamed on you! - Erik Quote
Power-Glide Posted October 3, 2003 Report Posted October 3, 2003 Prime the filter before installation Quote
H.P.Productions Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 in my 3.1 I always use 5 qaurts of 40 weighte oil... when you drive highe milage engines hard its suggested you use 40 weighte... and theirs no danger in adding 5 qaurts to your engine Quote
PaPaPooh Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 i put 4 and add as it needs it after a few miles Quote
mdelorie Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 I've always used 5qts of 10W30 synthetic. never need to add between changes, 250 000 kms. Quote
J Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 between 4.75 qts an 5 for me everytime of 5 w 30 synthetic later Jay Quote
sonyman87 Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 wtf. i have to put in 6 qts. sometimes 6.5 qts.. its freakin expensive i use mobil 1 synthetic. STP oil filter factory specs. 5 qts barly tuches the bottom hole in the dipstick sometimes lower then the hole. its a 95 3.4dohc i jack up the passanger side so i can slid under and drain the oil. do you think that would have anything to do with it?... im not stuipd i check the oil after getting the car back to ground level. sonyman87 Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 nope. i wonder if its the wrong dipstick but it looks the same as all the other 3.4dohc moters i have seen Quote
5speedz34 Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 No but for some reason it seems the 3.4 always takes more then neccesary. Mine takes 5.5-6.0, my friend I know had to put almost 6 in! Quote
