Possible transmission trouble?

My dad drove the anteater to work today. He called me after he got there and said that at a light, when it turned green, he tried to accelerate but the car wouldn't move. The RPMs were steady and constant at what you'd expect for trying to pull away from a light. When he let off the gas and tried again a little slower, he said he was able to get it to move.

When he was trying to get it to move the first time and it wouldn't, he said there was an audible slapping or clapping sound. Not sure what that means, but someone might.

Powertrain has 167,900+ miles on it. The transmission has never been serviced save for a flush about a year ago. When it was flushed, the fluid was a dark brown with a slightly reddish tint.

Any thoughts? Light it on fire and roll it down a hill?

Some newer info:

Dad drove it home and said that it only acts up under load. Under light to medium throttle, it's fine. For awhile it's not felt like it has had much power. Even at highway speeds, it's fine as long as you don't push it too hard. When you get on the throttle, it downshifts, the RPMs increase but the speed does not then it slams back into gear.

Could a bad torque converter do this? We've been going back and forth and that's what we've figured it could be. Shifts under light throttle even at high speed are smooth and firm.

I think I would try dropping the pan and put in some DEX VI, you know like 6 or 7 quarts and a new filter.

Drive it easy for a while. And let the new fluid clean your valve body.

It's just a thought

The shop got back to us. They couldn't find anything physically wrong with it. They were able to reproduce the issue, but didn't bother trying to fix it since they aren't sure what's causing it and they didn't want to do a bunch of work to it and the problem not get fixed.

So I'm going to do a pan drop and filter change. I'll be replacing the fluid with fresh GM Dex VI. I'll do as was suggested and drive it easy for awhile. After awhile I'll do another pan drop to try and get rid of the old fluid.

Question: Could a leaking/clogged modulator tube cause or exacerbate the problem I described in the OP? Looking at it, it looks like it isn't sitting properly on the little nipple on the transmission.

Could this be the same issue experienced at the dayton meet? Clogged cat?

That would be something to look into.

Someone I know was having issues with a Ford truck, and took it into a shop before I could look at it. Shop said it was the trans and they replaced it (supposidly, it looked cleaner then before). When I finally saw the truck, i noticed that the Cat had also been gutted....I kept my mouth shut...but i've always had this feeling that even from the description of the original issue...it was simply a clogged cat.
