stockgp
i finally started the 1.6 rocker swap on my tgp last night, and while drainging the oil i noticed that it had a slight gas smell. i think the car is running rich from the way the exhaust smells (exhaust also smells like oil, but that's from the turbo), but it's not running bad enough to throw any codes. my first guess would have been the injectors, but they are yellow tops and were new when installed a couple years ago. since then the car has only been driven 5-10 miles. other runt time has just been at idle in the garage. i had planned on draining the oil and reusing it because it's royal purple and has very little use ($$$). i was going to put in cheap oil for the new lifter break in and to flush out the coolant. so i'm thinking given that it may be running rich and the oil smells like gas, maybe i have a bad fpr? BXX
Do not use or reuse motor oil that smells like gas. Its gas fouled. You risk washing out the bearings (high increased wear) and also washign down the cylinder walls (piston ring wear) And quit wasting money on Royal Purple oil. Its a GM, not a twin turbo BMW. If you insist on synthetic, Mobil or Castrol are the way to go withoutt breaking the bank. Hmmm, now that I think of it, BMW recommends Castrol Synthtic:lol: Thats just my opinion on engine oil in a low-end car. I just use my works Kendal GT-1 Synblend. stockgp
if you read carefully, i said i HAD planned on reusing it. and there's nothing wrong with royal purple. especailly since i got it for 3 bucks a quart. i didn't ask for advice or criticism of my oil choices, just suggestions of what my problem could be. thanks Edited August 22, 2010 by stockgp
oscar_wilde
I would change the oil and keep checking the oil for any signs of gas again. I figure the gas is just unburnt gas from very little use over the years. The gas would drain down to the lowest point, in the oil pan. It could end up costing you way more than the $10 or so you spend on new oil.
mfewtrail
Dan, aren't you the one that posted about a x-over leaking recently? If so, that's probably contributing to a lot of the gas smell/gas content in the oil. When the x-over has a leak, exhaust leaks out & fresh air is drawn in where it's leaking. The o2 downstream of the x-over sees this extra air coming in and adds more fuel to compensate for what it's believing to be a lean mixture. jman093
You said it's only been driven 5-10 miles in that last 2 years and only idled in that time? It's gonna be like that. Engines runs rich whenever they're started. Oil's probably not getting hot enough to burn it off. A car needs to be driven, not just idled. stockgp
matt, i still have yet to verify positively that the crossover is leaking and not burning something off as was mentioned on tgpforums. still, i believe this is the case. and that's just great news . it's already taken me the better part of three years to get this far. and with money as tight as it is these days, i don't see me getting a new corssover any time soon. still, at least that gives me a direction to look in and thanks for the torque specs . jman, as much as i'd like to drive the car, it's nott o that point. no hood, fenders or front bumper. not to mention the copious amount of oil being spewed out the back. still, i hope you're right and it's just that she's not being driven. Exactly this.... when my cars are run over the winter time I idle them and in the spring the oil smells this way. But during summer use they do not. I wouldn't reuse the oil, though. Better insurance if you just buy new.
