Mike T
Hello all. This is my first post here. I have a question I need an answer to so I can keep enjoying my Grand Prix. Recently the head gasket failed in my car. Big time. Pegged the temp gage, oil in the coolant but so far no coolant in the oil. The engine has 190K on it so I figure I will just swap it out for a lower mileage engine. I have found several suitable engines but the issue is I am being asked by the recycling yards a question I can’t answer. I’m supposed to pick one of these choices. upper, ctr AC mtg on block drilled/tapped Or ; upper, ctr AC mtg on block not drilled/tapped Where is this “upper center mtg hole the recycler is referring to? A picture would be great. Sorry for the length of the post but I wanted to be clear on exactly what I am looking for. Mike T 1995 Grand Prix SE 3100 engine A/C, auto. virtuetovice
Before you go through the trouble of swapping a whole engine, take the top end apart and check out how much wear-and-tear it has. If it's not horrible just replace the gasket. I considered a new engine in my Cutlass but when I tore it down, there was hardly any wear that looked like it could become a problem. Just give it a chance. Bottom line; don't shoot the horse with a bummed leg. In response to your main concern, I would assume "upper, ctr AC mtg on block" is a shortened version of "upper, center A/C mounting on block" and drilled/tapped is exactly that...whether or not there is a set of holes drilled and threaded for the A/C compressor bolts. 3100 experts, feel free to bitchslap me if I'm wrong. Just using some context clues.
Mike T
Thanks for the reply. I have considered tearing it down and replacing all the gaskets instead of replacing the engine because what if the replacement engine is ready to hack up the gaskets too? I don't know what I will find when I get in there? Warped heads? Warped block? cracked heads/block? All I really want is my nice driving GP back. I have a line on a low miles (65k) engine with a warrentee and I am going that route. The trans was rebuilt 20k ago and the body and interior are in top shape. Everything works too. Even paying someone else to do the work it is still less expensive than buying another car. Thanks.
